*boyfriend with unhealthy obsessions about a celebrity.I have a boyfriend and we only started dating recently but I found out he has a really unhealthy obsession with Justin Bieber. He watches the believe movie every day almost, he dresses like him, has his hair cut like him and hes now getting the exact same tattoos. He has wild mood swings and I dont know how to handle it or help him. Please help me!

Hello southafrikan100, welcome to Psych Central.

You don't say how old your boyfriend is. Looking up to a celebrity figure can be part of finding our own identity, it only becomes a problem if the obsession takes over the person's life. For example, is he watching that film so often that he does nothing else? In which case it could be turning into OCD Obssessive-Compulsive Disorder Symptoms and Treatment OCD tends to be provoked by anxiety.

Here is an article about celebrity worship The Psychology of Celebrity Worship | World of Psychology

Can you sit down with your boyfriend and see if he is unhappy with his obsession at all, if so a trip to the doctor may be in order to find out what the underlying problem is.

He's 19 this year.It has taken over his life, his family has a issue with it so he moved states, people make fun of him, he doesn't socialise or do anything besides work and watching the believe movie. he loves looking like JB because he wants to be him because he hates himself, he always says he is nothing/worthless. He had a really rough childhood as well

You can't do anything to help him. He has to realize he has a problem, see a therapist, etc If he hates himself and feels worthless he can't love anyone else.

Sit him down and talk to him, that's the only way you can really know whether he's got a serious problem. He might have some trauma in his life and idolizing Justin Bieber is how he makes himself feel better. It might just be a phase it might not. But talk to him.
