I have a white noise machine that I use during the day occasionally.
In summer I´m bothered by noise more often when I want to sleep but I find the white noise distracting when falling asleep. Can you get used to white noise? Should i keep trying? Are ocean sounds or rain better? Thank you! |

I would think white noise would be something a person can get habituated to, but I'm not sure about using it for sleep. It's usually used to cover up sounds, such as in a therapist's office.
Maybe you can find something meant more for sleep. ![]() |

I guess most people have to find what works for them even if it's through trial and error. Hopefully you'll find the right sound for you. |

Come to think of it, I do like the sound of the overhead fan in my bedroom.

I must be one of the few that can't stand white noise. I just can't block it out and it grates on my nerves. I prefer total silence.

Idk, its one noise I can't relax in, feels like it scratches my brain.
I can fall asleep to my brother playing his guitar on max volume, or sit in total and complete silence, but I can't stand white noise for longer than a minute or 2, then it has me wanting to rip out my hair. Ocean/nature sounds like it would be a much more relaxing type of sound.

I'm like manxcatwoman and travelinglady, I like a fan (and a humidifier in winter). Where I live is very very quiet (surrounded on 3 sides by water). i would just find a sound I do like or that does not bother me and try to use that.

I grew up in a very noisy city so the quiet has always been an issue. Plus in total silence I start to hear things and it makes me freak out. At first I used music, then tv, then I got a white noise machine and I has 2volume setting but different abilities for different noise. I use the white noise machine if I don't have a tv around so usually when I'm out of town or staying at someone else's house.
