I was just wondering because my second appointment is this friday and I wanted to know if I could expect a diagnosis? I want to put a label on what is wrong with me so that I can properly address it here and in life. How many appointments was it for you or typically?

Getting a diagnosis is different for every one and every disorder/illness... "most" doctors arent in hurry to "label" someone until they are certain of a diagnosis..

Voice your certain about when you should be getting a diagnosis next pdoc appt you have .

Good luck

I took several years for my dx of BP. Initially dx w/ depression which is common as normaly people don't seek help cause they feel good, energetic, godlike etc. try to be as through as u can, take notes as thoughts come to you &'bring to appt so you'll remember. Learning all you can about different psychological disorders may help if you find yourself relating to certain illnesses. Best of luck to you!

I honestly, don't know? Summary sheets, of appointments only became available, last year, in my doctor's office. I'd been under treatment/ care of my PDoc, since 2009. Perhaps, for billing, within the first several months. Before treatment, the nurse/secretary mentioned the break down of how the appointments would go. The initial 45minute consultation, followed by a couple more 15minute appointments. I want to say I started in early January, after a three month wait, by April I was prescribed an AD. Perhaps, that's when the billing code/diagnosis was added? Last year, I realized what I have, for a label. Knew I was being treated for anxiety and some depression.

Several months when I was 20, with weekly sessions. Same thing now, with a different psychiatrist/therapist team. Three months of weekly sessions before they made a diagnosis, affirming the one I was given when I was 20.

I had my adult diagnosis's with in the first 3 sessions (course my sessions were not weekly. I had a couple sessions then referred for diagnostic evaluations then the psychiatrist, therapist and I met again after all the tests have been done. I dont count the testing appointments as therapy sessions due to it was a psychiatrist not my therapist and no therapy was done just testing.). so Appointment with my therapist wise it was 3 sessions. spaced out over the course of a month.

here in america you can get a diagnosis just by asking your treatment providers for a psychiatric evaluation for diagnostic purposes. here in NY when someone requests a psychiatric evaluation a referral is put in by a therapist or medical doctor. then the client goes to a psychiatrist or psychologist and completes a battery of tests. some diagnosis's require the medical doctor ruling out medical problems. after the tests are complete the client receives their diagnosis. how long it takes depends upon scheduling and what tests need to be done.

I got my diagnosis after my first appointment. I was VERY manic so I got it quickly. I had all the obvious symptoms.

Well, it depends on who you're seeing (therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist) and why you're seeing them. Mine was a single evaluation split over two appointments, as I'd gone specifically for diagnosis. Most of it consisted of filling out psychological assessments and giving my history to the psychologist.

I'd been referred to the psychologist by my GP because he only does med management, not psychological evaluations. I thought this was the normal way to do it, as I couldn't receive treatment without a diagnosis because my insurance requires a billing code for meds and appointments.

For me, the second intake appointment. But I think they do that on purpose for everybody who comes in and goes through to the 2nd evaluation at the mental health department here in my city so that they know where to place you in treatment.
