I've heard that Depression can get worse as we get older. Is this true? It sure seems like it for me.

Good question! It's not that it gets worse as such, it's just that it's harder to learn to cope with it. Everyone is different and we can't make generalizations (some people have depression for a short time and others have depression their whole life) but an older person tends to find it harder to find the motivation to seek therapy/medication etc.

Hi, rhode island red, I think the reason we can see an increase in depression with age is because of the natural losses we can experience with age, such as loss of friends and family to death, loss of good health, etc.
Thanks for this!

I'll have to ask my psychiatrist what's happening. I'm sorry, rhode island red and Jolisse, that you are seeing your depression get worse. I will be 60 in January and am doing okay. Of course I am medicated to the hilt and see a therapist.

Hopefully, as we age, we have learned coping skills to deal with depression. The depression still rears it's ugly head but for me I am able to handle it much much better with age.

It definitely seems true for me. Although I have a thousand times better coping skills it still seems to have gotten worse. It may be because I am not as resilient as when I was younger and don't bounce back as fast. I do not know. Mine I firmly believe is very biological and it may be the natural progression of the disease, I dunno. I am going to ask my pdoc what he thinks.

It only depends on the person on how he will cope with depression.

In that case I just can't wait to continue aging...

Not entirely sure if that is true or not in all cases, I imagine usually various factors determine that...but I am sure it can get worse with age.
