I got in from work and was having an internal rant to myself about all the ways I don't like my job. I could hear mumbling voices and vaguely thought that someone must be watching TV. Then I remembered that I was the only one in the house. I tried to strain my hearing to see if the sounds were coming from somewhere else (from next door, or a car radio being played loudly, maybe) but as soon as I focused on the source of the voices they ceased.
Then I realized that the mumbling sounding a lot like one of my colleagues.

I used to hearing echoes of colleague's conversations just as I'm about to fall asleep at night (hypnogogic hallucinations are very common), and this was very similar. Except I was fully awake and it was 2pm.

I suppose that my conscious mind could have been so focused on ranting that my subconscious went into overdrive.

Any ideas?

Hello BBB2,

Can be many things.

How well are you sleeping at the moment? Lack of sleep can make us dream while we are awake. If you don't get enough REM sleep then the brain will do it when it can, especially if you are run down, stressed or tired.

Having hallucinations does not mean you are schizophrenic, it can be due to extreme anxiety, stress, part of depression or part of bipolar. It sounds like you were stressed after work.

Sometimes hearing voices can be a flashback - part of PTSD, where the mind will playback previous traumatic experiences. This can be very distressing.

Please go and see your doctor if it continues.

I have had many strange little things like this over the course of my life with depression and anxiety. They were anomalies. There is a very good possibility your experience was also.
At the time I wondered if these were signs of worse things to come. They weren't. Try not to put additional stress on yourself over this.
Thanks for this!

Thank you for your reply.
I did not sleep so well the night before. Generally, I sleep well, but I also seem to be the kind of person who needs a lot of sleep and doesn't cope well with lost sleep.
Thankfully, I do not have PTSD. However, I sometimes wonder if I am misophonic in regard to my colleagues' voices. We work in small room filled with children and my colleagues have to raise their voices to be heard. I like my colleagues, but I'm ashamed to say that I find raised voices grates on me. That is the biggest cause of my stress. I wonder if it sticks in my mind and comes back as a flashback as you mentioned.

Thank you, this is reassuring to hear. I am also glad that they were only anomalies for you too.

This also mean work overload, and to long in a very stressful work situation. To long, with loud people who are always talking loudly, all the time, constantly with no let up. This means you have an excellent memory that is almost photographic. You mind records sounds and images well. You probably remember music as well. It might be best to change jobs and be with quieter people, in a more quiet work place. Your mind is just replaying noise that your mind recorded during a horrible loud work day, with loud constant talkers.
