So this is a random topic but I'm currently torn in making a major life decision & would really appreciate any opinions and advice to help me feel more at peace and sure of the decision I make. Okay, I'll try to get straight to the point without going on for too long. 3 years ago when I moved into my first apartment I adopted a rescue pit bull to keep me company and feel safe at night living alone (always been a dog owner entire life and pit bull lover because of misunderstood discrimination of breed) so in love with this dog-Cali. She's become my new best friend/running partner/car buddy/bed cuddler etc. never ever aggressive towards humans whatsoever, gentle with kids and babies 100% trust except with other large intimidating dogs. About 6 months ago I took in another pit bull puppy off the streets. Cali enjoyed the new play mate at first but now puppy's full grown (Nala) and Cali gets more and more jealous of her even though I'm always careful to greet, feed and pet Cali first but it's never enough. Nala will initiate playtime but Cali turns an innocent game of "Nip-at-legs" into a blood-drawing death match! Cali is much larger than Nala and much stronger. This past week my Mom came over to visit and for some reason her knocking on the door triggered Cali to attack Nala by the neck attempting and almost succeeding in killing her! Luckily my Mom was able to help me break up the fight but they were both covered head to toe in blood along with my carpet, bed and apartment walls! This happened for the third time this week (triggered by the apartment maintenance knocking at my door) this time I was alone and was somehow miraculously able to pull Cali off of Nala's blood-soaked neck but at some point during my attempt, Cali reached back and bit my upper arm. I have no recollection of this happening-being in complete shock and denial and didn't feel any pain or even notice until later-I guess due to my adrenaline pumping full throttle! I could tell from the 2 holes on opposite sides of my bicep that her jaws had completely surrounded my arm and judging by the depth of the holes it had to have been her back K9 teeth that punctured all the way through my muscle tissue, covered in purplish bruises instantly, also leaving my whole arm sore and useless for 3 days. I blame myself for bringing a new young pup into Cali's home and territory knowing how jealous and possessive she is of my attention and affection! My Mother is insistent that I have Cali "humanly euthanized" but I just can't bring myself to do it! I've had her for 3 years now and I love her unconditionally! And I know re-homing her isn't an option because she's already so attached to me as am I to her plus the possible aggression issues. I have always felt that she is more a child to me than a dog, and I already have the same bond with Nala! So giving her up is not an option. Am I crazy??? Honest opinions/advice much needed and appreciated PLEASE!!! (I won't be offended)

You cannot change a dog's nature. I do not believe that Cali should be put down for doing what is natural to her. You just have to make sure she is NEVER around other animals. IF you cannot keep them separated full time so Cali cannot attack Nala then the only option is to give Nala up. If you love Nala and feel bonded to her then why do you want to keep her where she will keep being hurt? What happens when you finally aren't able to separate them in time? Part of loving someone is doing what is right and best for them, even if it's not what you want to do.
You have learned a valuable lesson: no other pets while you have Cali. MY heart truly goes out to you. It's a horrible position to be in. Please make sure that your yard is escape proof so Cali cannot get out and attack a neighbor's pet. That happened to a good friend of mine. Her pit was a wonderful family dog. One of the sweetest dogs I've ever been around but she was very animal aggressive. She got out and maimed the neighbor's german shepherd. My friend had to pay over $23,000 in court costs/fines/vet bills. Please be careful. |

Wow, You're so right. Cali was here first and deserves to stay not be replaced and Nala is in danger that Im physically incapable of controlling. Thank you so much for your advice Raindropvampire!

Cali should come first. Cali didn't bite you intentionally, She was in a war with Nala and she wasn't paying attention to what you were doing nor even realize she bite you and not Nala.
So rehoming Nala would be the best solution and Nala might very well now also be a Dog that should the only dog in a home. Do you know of someone that could take Nala now so you have time to find her a wonderful safe home? Or check with your local pit bull rescue, explain the situation and see if they can possible board her while you find a that home she deserves. Please do be upfront with anyone interested in adopting Nala that she and Cali fought and it has been ugly. They need to know the history so they don't bring home a puppy and Nala feel threatened and starts fighting due to the trauma she is going through atm. Do take extra care to make sure you have her under complete control while you out, often once a dog is pushed to fighting she may feel she will have to continue to fight for your attention. this is true of all breeds not just pitbulls. Im sorry you have to make a tough decision ![]()

Thank you so much for your advice Christina. It's so obvious now that Cali should come first, after all it is her home! Also It will be alot easier to find Nala a home than Cali since she is young and alot less "pit-bull looking".

Aggression is natural to the breed. You learned the hard way, that breaking up a dog fight can lead to serious injury. Never again try to break up a dog fight with your hands or body. Cali can turn aggressive when the dogs territorial instincts are triggered. Cali, could turn on a Human child with out any warning because of this instinct.
As said above, only one dog in your house hold should be allowed. Going by the intensity and violence of the attacks, and the amount of blood every where, Cali has become a dangerous dog. Try keeping Nala, but observe her carefully, and only have her as a pet, and no others. You need not to invite another, possibly more horrible incident, that could involve the Police, death, or severe injury to a child. |
