Last night I admitted myself to the ER & was simultaneously diagnosed as depressed & bipolar (depressed). Is this possible...? To suffer from both bipolar disorder AND depression at the same time? My past diagnosis was psychotic depression, and now it's bipolar II disorder, and now it's bipolar disorder and depression. I'm so confused.

Anybody been through something similar or know if this is possible? So confused now...

It does sound unusual to have unipolar depression diagnosed together with bipolar depression. At the same time, considering the fact that your diagnosis has changed each time, maybe, my gut impression that is, is that maybe there's uncertainty about giving you the bipolar diagnosis, even though it lingers, from I to II. Dunno. Hopefully someone with experience can help better answer.
Can you ask your dr at your follow up appointment or address it with your therapist?
Thanks for this!

Thank you, healingme4me. My psychiatrist diagnosed me as bipolar II, the social worker/clinician diagnosed me as bipolar/depressed, but my T & first psychiatrist both diagnosed me as major depressive disorder w/ psychotic features. I don't think they know exactly 100% is going on w/ me.

Unfortunately, I can't see my "psychiatrist" until August, b/c she is [booked]. I can see my T soon though, within the next couple of weeks. I wonder what she has to say about this...

here in my location when a treatment provider uses the wording ...depressed ... they are noting the clients mood.. example is the clients present mood happy or depressed (sad) when a treatment provider here in my location uses the term depression thats a diagnostic label of a mental disorder.

based on going by my location your first post says to me the treatment provider noted that your mood /feeling\emotion was depressed and gave you a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

by the way bipolar disorder is a type of depression. the difference between plain depression and bipolar is bipolar has patterned cycles. where as depression doesnt have the patterned cycles.

Hello convalescence,

Yes you can have many different mental health issues going on at the same time. Usually there is depression as part of the bipolar.
