Planning to move to an apartment question. Not sure where this best belongs. Hope for some input. Situation...decided to move to an apartment after many decades in houses for the freedom from worrying about maintenance etc. Found the perfect place, filled out all the paperwork. Just waiting for a ground floor with an outdoor courtyard. As was showing a friend the place at their website, scrolled to the very end & found a Tracking Policy. Neither of us had heard of it & she started teasing me about it being a complex for people with dementia. Asking if I had noticed any locked doors, armed guards etc😀😀 . It said that by using their cable setup (apparently no other options if I want cable, wifi, etc) I give them permission to view my useage including all social media postings. After a big WHAT... we reread & yea that's what it said. I'm assuming that means they could view my posts here. Anyone encounter anything like this?

I'm sorry that you have to even read through such a policy - wow ... I'm speechless, I've never heard of such a thing. Yikes!

It's pretty standard in all user agreements:

"Customer and each User agree that We or our agents have, to the maximum extent permitted by law, the right (but not the obligation) to monitor postings, content and communications electronically from time to time made through the Service using Customer's account or connection, including e-mail, newsgroups, chat boards and Webspace content and communications, and to disclose any information as necessary or we reasonably believe to be prudent to satisfy any law, regulation or other governmental request, to operate the Service or to protect Mediacom or its affiliates, suppliers or subscribers. We reserve the right to refuse to permit Customer or any User to post, transmit, receive or store, and also reserve the right to remove, any content, message or material that We deem unacceptable, undesirable, offensive or in violation of this Agreement, law or third-party rights."

So am I correct that they can view posts here? They can read posts to family & their replies ? That would mean I not only open my posts but everyone I communicate with. How do I know what they deem acceptable? Can I ask about their religious, political, etc positions. Probably not. So they can just remove a post cuz they don't like it. Gee, I wonder if I could get a job spending the day reading, judging, interfering in other people's lives. I was really hoping there was some misunderstanding or limits. But basically this would no longer be a safe place.

Overreacting a little as there are hundreds of thousands of customers and they really have no interest (and though they have the ability, probably not the expertise) in looking at individual's accounts. They have to cover their legal behinds is all and protect their business interests. So, it is very much about them and not really about you at all. They are not reading your stuff or even thinking of you as a person but as "traffic" patterns. The most they are doing is probably, high up in the cable chain (not your apartment building tom, richard, or harry) is monitoring your traffic, making sure none of it comes or goes from/to known international bad guys. This is done anyway, in ways we laymen don't know/understand. Welcome to the digital age. No one knows "you" come here, much less reads what you say or is said to you. It's about your computer/connection. I think of the ways "they" protect me from the bad guys rather than what it might be possible for them to do.

Somewhat reassuring, I agree they don't care what you post unless it's to a terrorist organisation or something like that. Phew!

I mentioned this at a party recently. Those who were aware of this generally said what u all did. Then a lady who had been assistant complex manager said that was all true but they do do an initial 'research interview'. She said people lie on applications all the time. So they run "verifications" the first week after u move in. She was mostly surprised that the management company had it on their website. She said it is usually buried in the legalese & nobody notices it. Unfortunately, we were then interrupted. My mother use to say if u don't what the world to read it, don't write it down. And that was before computers.

a friend of mine died in 1977 and one of the last things she said was never write anything down on paper if you don't want to ever be read, what to do now with computers?
