It is more than likely you will have nightmares while cutting back on drinking. This your mind adjusting and processing the change. Often much anxiety results.

It may not actually trigger it, your mind is now less numb, your thoughts are less dulled, so more room for the nightmares to actively surface.

Withdrawal from alcohol or any drug can cause changes in sleep, dreams, moods. It's probably your brain readjusting to less alcohol. If it starts to interfere in your sleep or life in general, do seek treatment.

Do you have an underlying MI like PTSD? I've been sober for 6 months but I blame my nightmares on my meds really.

Dx: BP2, PTSD, bulimia/anorexia
Seroquel 150mgs
Risperdal 4mg
Trileptal 600mgs

Yes. Drinking blocks out lots of stuff. Not drinking lets that stuff resurface.

you've gotten some excellent and insightful responses. my contribution is mostly to confirm, by my own experiences, what others have said. oh, and i can't use caps right now; one arm is incapacitated - sorry if this makes reading this difficult.

i am an alcoholic. i drank to excess to escape. it is often said that alcohol is but a symptom of alcoholism. remove the alcohol and the reasons we drank to excess or alcoholically remain. unless we deal with those issues, the drinking either returns or we replace the escape mechanism with something else - drugs, shopping, overeating, etc. in my opinion, the cause of the nightmares are the reason that you drank as much as you did. for hope only, let me share that i've been clean and sober for twenty-three years now and the nightmares stopped many, many years ago. good luck.
Thanks for this!

Yes, after the drug wears off, the mind starts to recover. This is normal after effects of years of using. Hang in there, it does get better. Proud of you for quitting. Job well done! tc
Thanks for this!
