Hi all,

As the title says. Is sleeping late (e.g. sleep at 12Am or 1Am) not sleep deprivation (e.g. sleep at 1Am, wake up at 5Am) causing mental illness?
Some people say it's the latter one that is causing mental illness but at the same time there are also people who are sleeping late and suffering from mental illness. Any thought will be appreciated, thanks.

Hello PC1100: I can't give you a definitive answer to your question. Personally I don't believe that either sleeping a lot or sleeping too little causes mental illness. Either one can be a sign that a person is struggling with mental health issues. And certainly being sleep deprived makes mental health issues just all that much worse. But that doesn't mean that sleep, either too much or too little, causes mental illness.

Anyway, I see this is your first post here on PC. So... welcome to PsychCentral… from the Skeezyks! I hope you find the time you spend here to be of benefit.

PsychCentral is a great place to get information as well as support for mental health issues. There are many knowledgeable & caring members here. Plus there are social groups you can join & chat rooms where you’ll be able to connect with other PC members in real time (once your first 5 posts have been reviewed & approved.) Lots of great stuff! No. Off-hours sleep is a major symptom of mental illness, though.

It's really quite the paradox because I think continual bad sleep could cause a mental disorder to form

But

A mental illness could cause the bad sleep in the first place.

Just my opinion.

Violating your inner sleep pattern will not specifically cause mental illness but it will cause mental unwellness and an increased risk of some cancers. This means, if you are a true night hawk, you can get damaged by forcing yourself up early every morning, and if you are a lark, you might fall ill if you always work the night shift.

People are quite programmed with their own type of sleep schedule. That said, getting depressed might make you an owl when you weren't one before. Sometimes the sleep changes actually appear you yourself understand you are heading for a depressive episode.

My nurse used to claim I was making myself depressed because I did not rise at 7 am as was her ideal for her system. I say she was a moron.

No idea! I'm inclined to say no but insomnia does occur as part of some MI. Check with your doctor to ease your concerns and get answers. Good luck!
