The title pretty much says it all. I simply have no way of affording a therapist. I suffer from anxiety and depression and have basically had to self-medicate/cope with it myself for years. I'm able to function and go about a relatively normal and uneventful life, but sometimes my issues flare up and make things difficult. I would love to know if there are any resources I could look into or if anyone has any suggestions.

ask a clinic if they have a sliding scale. Many have adjustable rates based on whether you have insurance and your current work status/income level.

Sorry for the double post but I just thought of something else there are a couple of online free therapy services out there as well. I've gone on these and talked to a couple people a few times. Try for instance 7 cups of tea for example.

In my past experienceseveral I've found that in a city, they usually have Mental Health clinics. They usually have an intake person question you about your issues then provide a list of therapists. They go by your financial situation. There is help but can be more than difficult but can be done.

Perhaps you might start with your family doctor. They do have some, albeit minimal, training in basic mental healthcare. They would at least be able to discern whether your issue is a mood disorder or something that requires a more involved diagnosis. They ought to be able to prescribe basic medication that could help anxiety and depression.

But seeing your family doctor might have other benefits too. They should be able to make suggestions regarding mental healthcare and even provide you a referral.

I am pretty sure most communities have some sort of mental health association. They would have lists of care providers that might help.

Finally, seek out a support group - specifically one that deals broadly with mood disorders. This as probably been the single most important factor in my own care.
