We've all had those awkward moments when we were eating at a restaurant or even at a social gathering and while you are in the middle of eating, someone decides to start talking to you. I hate it when it happens, makes me feel bad and also makes me wonder why they would even start a conversation when you obviously have food in your mouth.

Anyone know why that happens? I do feel bad but at the same time, sometimes I wonder why some people, who clearly see you eating, decide to start talking or asking questions when you are chewing and can't respond, and then sometimes they seem confused at why they're not getting a response. How do you deal with these awkward moments? Just curious since I'd like to see if there is a better way rather than make them wait for an answer.

It's so common these days that I don't even notice it anymore. I'm as guilty as the next person about this. While maybe not when you have a mouthful of food!

Can you not talk between bites? I enjoy conversation while at dinner, restaurants, etc.
Thanks for this!

I can. I am talking about when I am actually chewing. Like, why ask me a question or, in some cases if it is someone new, introduce themselves while I am chewing and need some time before I can reply. That is just awkward. I just think it would be better for people to wait until I'm done chewing before asking a question. I don't like putting someone in that situation either. Makes people uncomfortable.

It depends. If you were eating in a restaurant with friends, it would awkward not to talk. I think people would understand if you didn't answer right away because you are eating.
