In group therapy today we did this activity where you had to write two positive things about two people in the room. It didn't matter who. So some people got 3 or 4, I didn't get any. I kind of made a fuss about it. I was already having a bad day and I just felt kind of bad that no one wrote anything about me. What I thought was that the activity should of been done differently. Like maybe we should of just wrote the positive things about the two people to the left instead of just anyone. It was an intern doing the group. I shouldn't have gotten so butt hurt from it, but my therapist and my mom said I wasn't excatly being unreasonable when I got upset, and that I had a right to be hurt and she should of done it differently so everyone was involved. My job is being very demanding, and my work schedule changes daily. I have a hard time with changes in my schedule, and earlier in the day I had gotten a text from my boss asking me to come into work immediately and when I told her I was in the middle of something, she seemed annoyed at me. I was just upset about that so that's why I was more uptight about other things.

My goodness, I don't blame you one bit for feeling upset. I lead a peer support group and I attend another support group and I cannot imagine a group facilitator being so insensitive. What a pointless group activity...reminds me of the old days when kids were 'picked' by other kids to be on a team. Outrageous. I am so, so sorry you had such a hurtful experience.
Thanks for this!

You absolutely have a right to be upset. I would have been upset also. I probably wouldn't have said it to them tho. I would have just sat there and acted like nothing was wrong. Good for you for letting them know!

P.s. I heard somewhere, that even if our feelings are not logical and do not make sense to others (or even us) that they are still our feelings, and we have them for a reason. They shouldn't be ignored or dismissed, by anyone, including ourselves.

If they don't benefit us, for whatever reason, there are ways to deal with that (like emotion regulation in DBT), but the feelings are still happening for a reason, and sometimes trying to find that reason is the best thing we can do.

What an embarrassing outcome to an ineffectual activity. The intern apparently didn't think this through very well. I'm sorry you had to experience that. Hopefully the intern learns from this outcome and does something better next time. Hang in there.

I agree, this would have been a better task because it would include everyone instead of having it turn out the way it did.

The intern is "practicing" right now so that means that intern will be learning "while" doing. Hopefully you made it a point to talk about this so that this intern will learn something and make it a point to improve the way the exercise is done.

Thanks for this!

Wow, that was bad. Yes you were right to be upset.
Be proactive in future, a little assertiveness has never hurt anybody.
If such a situation arises again, ask for the process to be changed.....to say, write about the two people to your left.
Sometime the leaders of the group therapy is inexperiences or just tired and has a slip up.....lets gently help them out.
I think that way you most certainly will go away not feeling so bad and you might certainly avoid others feeling the same way.
Sorry for your bad experience. Chin up.

No wonder you felt the way you did.

I would be. That sounds like a popularity contest. The intern hopefully was talked to about this.

Everyone has a right to get upset. It is perfectly normal.
