This person I know who is 24, has been in the hospital for 2 months. What would cause someone her age to be in the hospital that long? Doesn't she need to be having some kind of behavior issues? I've never heard of people her age with behavior issues that bad. Won't her insurance run out? Also if she is being agressive, and she's an adult, wouldn't the hospital eventually call the police if it continues? I know teenagers who were in the hospital that eventually went to jail after their behavior issues continued for long periods of time.

Maybe she is just depressed? But then why is she not getting better with medications?

I am not trying to be a jerk, I'm just wondering what would cause an adult to be in the hospital for 2 months.

Hello, Bozdickens. I assume you mean a mental hospital. It's hard to say, but I'd think whatever caused the hospitalization is still being treated. Could be all sorts of disorders.

I'm not sure about insurance. The most I've been in the hospital is two weeks or so, if I recall correctly. I would think insurance would cover treatment for a good while.

Who's been in the hospital that long around here? What can you tell us?

I've known young adults who've been in longer. One was schizophrenic and it took a long time for him to get the right med combo, plus still be functional to finish school. So it depends.

I've been in the hospital many times, and my longest visit was over 3 months. It was during a very rough depression where we tried several medications, then eventually tried ECT. It worked for me but it was a long process. Sometimes people need longer admissions. Generally though my stays are much shorter (my last couple of admissions have been a week long)

I was in the hospital for 4 months out for 2 and then in again a 4 month stay. I was extremely suicidal, even had some serious attempts while being treated in the hospital, had ECT and many, many drug changes. I now have minor hospital stays for 1 to 2 weeks but continue to do ECT as an outpatient. I am fortunate in the sense that my drug regimen and ECT seem to be working now.

My great-niece has been in a psychiatric hospital for 13 months. She's 21 and schizophrenic.

I can't remember how long it was that one of my relatives who is schizophrenic was in the hospital but it was somewhere between 6-12 months. They couldn't get him stable. He's doing well now but he was in the hospital for awhile. His insurance covered it.

I used to work at several large insurance companies and they would typically put limits or caps on mental health benefits; sometimes even with a lifetime max. It differs widely. Best wishes.

From my experience, psych wards want to milk you for as much money as possible.

If somebody is there for 2 months or longer, it is most likely due to the fact that they are finding every little flaw about this person that they possibly can to use against them so that they can milk her with as big of a hospital bill as possible. You don't want to attend a group? You have behavioral issues. You don't want to go to bed at 10PM and wake at 6AM? You have sleep issues. You talk too loud or are a little nervous? You're disrupting the unit. You are a little too friendly with another inmate (patient)? You have a disregard for the rules. See the pattern here?

Psych wards are little more than prisons for the mentally ill that you have to pay an overpriced rental fee for to live there.

I know that as an adult, I'm in debt for about 11 grand for a 6 day stay and I don't plan on ever paying it back and IDGAF how much it hurts my personal credit score.

Of course I could be wrong and the hospitals could be better where you live but I'm going off my experience being in psych lockup both as a child and adult.

No, one won't get better simply being on meds. I had ECT treatment during my hospitalization.

And a word about medications. Generally medications don't start to take affect for 6-10 weeks. That is basically 2 months right there and that doesn't even count time necessary to tweek the medication regime until they find the best combination.

So there is nothing to get angst over.

I've been in the crisis ward for up to 9 weeks for psychotic suicidal depression. I had quit eating and drinking. I tried multiple drugs and eventually ECT. It got me well enough to be discharged.

Edit: I was 17.

Back in November-December I was in the hospital for about a month and 2 weeks. In my case it was because I was having issues with housing and they can't just throw you out on the street.
But another reason could simply be that her condition hasn't improved enough for her to leave. If they discharge you before you're ready and something happens, the hospital can be held liable.

There are SO many reasons why she may still be in the hospital. Maybe she's been diagnosed with a severe enough disorder that they won't release her on her own, so they may be waiting for a bed in an assisted living facility to open up for her or family to be able to take her. They won't just discharge mental health patients.

Maybe they are searching for the appropriate medications and want her to do it under observation.

Maybe she is receiving long term treatment for trauma or addiction.

There are just so many reason she is still in the hospital. Her insurance must be approving her to stay in because the doctors have to submit for approval to keep her there every few days.

Medications don't always help depression, if that is what she has, and also, it can take a lot of trial and error to figure out which medications will help her. No two people are alike.

Is this person a friend? Are you close to her? Why are you so curious about her personal business?

Guess I'm being nosy. It's none of my business. I'm Facebook friends with her. We were in a group home together. We PM each other and like each other's posts. I'm just wondering. Sorry. She posts a lot on Facebook about being in the hospital for a couple of months at a time.
