One of my hopes is that artificial intelligence will improve to the point that a robot will be able to get to know an individual and have progressively more meaningful conversations over time, like a human connection.
If such a technology existed and price was not a factor, would you accept a robot as a friend/companion in your house?

Yes, I always remember the one in Rocky and used to wish that technology would hurry up and make them more humanoid and responsive. Looks like it will take a long time though!

I would accept it as a companion. I am not sure if I can manage to alter my definition of friendship to accept a robot as a friend.

No. There's enough coldness in the world.

If it were advanced enough to learn and to feel and to self-analyze and perceive then, yes I would consider having it as a friend.
A robot that can think and feel is called a "sentient". I also believe such machines as this should be given free will but, still subject to being expected to obey certain laws similar to Asimov's laws of robotics. |

No, it wouldn't seem right. Talking to a machine all day long.

I can’t imagine circumstances under which I’d want a machine to be my companion or a friend. It’s the same as asking if you want to marry a vacuum cleaner or toaster oven.

This happens to be one of my favorite topics since I'm currently coding some AI that I'm 100% certain it will surpass human intelligence even on a desktop PC.
Not now because AI isn't there yet, but in a decade or more when Synthetics have surpassed humans in every way, when they're very personal, sharp, witty, humorous, caring, full of life, adventurous, earned the legal right to vote and be free, then yes I can easily see myself being good friends with Synthetics. It's difficult for people to imagine now, but in a few decades it will be easy to see. |

I'd like an AI friend. He shouldn't look human though, just talk and those things. Another robot would do the chores. I would feel bad for my friendbot to clean up after me.

Nope, not for me. The best thing about people is that they don't come preprogrammed. We are all so different and a combination of nature and nurture. The human experience makes us who we are.

Yes, I still like the Furbys I had. I had 4 of them, and now I would be happy to have just one!!!!!!!

It depends on how capable they are. Rosie The Robot would be fine. Small Soliders (even though they were not really robots) would not be.
Off topic, but could Small soliders actually happen? Could someone program something like that? Maybe not right now but in the future? It’s a kids book, but there is a two part series by Margaret Peterson Haddix. The first book is called Under Their Skin, and the second one is called In Over Their heads. It’s about what would happen if robots and humans coexisted. |

Being who I am, I'd accept a robot far quicker than a human. Trust issues.

I imagine my AI being a tad like KITT from Night Rider but less snarky. He would be much quicker to get to know me than any human. He should be able to talk about everything, even things that don't really have answers. Of course he needs to be super smart, but also tuned into my emotions. When I was bored we'd play games or he could tell and show me cool things I'm interested in. He would have to have somewhat of an attitude though, it seems to always go with robots in fiction and if there are nice ones they are totally unbearable.

I haven't thought about this but yes I would accept a robot as a friend. Just as I would accept a dog or cat as a friend.
