Self love always seems trite to me. I know everything bad about me, even stuff that was just in my head. Every time I was impatient with someone, every time I did less than I should have, times that I just flatly didn’t care. I know every single one of them. That makes it pretty hard to love oneself in my opinion. What do some of you think though?

Yes. Everyone deserves to be loved, and self love is one of the best things a person can experience.

I swear those of us with a mental illness or trauma history are pre-programed to hate ourselves. Its like the one thing we are 100% good at.

It may seem trite on the surface, I see what you're saying as it can almost come accross as just another platitude.

For me, it's more of a matter of not putting myself last on the list where life was once a place of pleasing everyone else but myself and becoming nothing more than a doormat or target.

Self care and self love-so to speak, speaks to placing self care at the top of the list. My health and well being matters.

I think you’re on to something there, self care might be better term than self love. Remember to find indeed, make time, for things you enjoy.

I found it worked better, as an expression, for me after I grappled with it for years. It really burned at me, at my own core when I first started hearing it years ago. It was more recently that I started hearing more about self care, especially on Sundays-it's a "thing." It made much more sense.

I understand what you mean, annoyedgrunt84. Self love is not easy to achieve at all. However, I think it is possible to love ourselves, I agree with healing4me that you could see it like self care as well. Take some time of yourself, remember that you're important and valuable, and most importantly, don't put yourself last. We have to take care of ourselves as well. Think of it as a way of self-preservation. I hope thinking it in that terms helps you a bit. Stay safe and take care of yourself. Feel free to PM me anytime. I'm always available if you need to talk. Sending many hugs to you

When I hear the term "self-love" my mind thinks of a narcissist. When I hear the term "loving ourselves" I think of someone who is really caring for themselves....their physical & mental wellness.

Yes, we are capable of loving ourself. Doing what we need to do to improve our own personal wellness & in doing that we have a lot more of our well self to share in good ways with others.

That oxygen mask in the air plane is what loving ones self is all about. We have to take care if ourselves first before we really can give of ourselves to others without it ending up hurting us.
