I just got a text message from some unknown number and the only thing the message said was “hi.” I’m kinda freaking out a bit... I just deleted the number and text. It did look a bit familiar but it’s not like I have any enemies or anything. Was it just a scam?

Could be a wrong number? Strange that it looked like a familiar number, though. Do you have any former friends whose number you deleted? I used to get loads of wrong number calls on my first mobile number, some of them even called more than once!

I have a couple old coworkers I deleted a year ago. Not sure what they’d want though.

It maybe that someone texted you by mistake. It’s happened to me and I have done it myself.

Some scammers do start off that way. I would have done the same thing. If it was someone you knew, they'd say, 'hi, it's <<name>> or add their name after you didn't respond. Sometimes people just text random numbers too.

It could be someone you know, or a wrong number. If you dont have their name and they don't introduce themselves as someone you know, don't respond.

I just read an article two days ago about “smishing” which is like phishing but for text messages. Some of them may appear real or from businesses and services you actually use but they are spoofed numbers. If you aren’t expecting anything delete and never respond. If you even respond to ask who it is they know they have a live number. I got one yesterday asking me to contact someone about a delivery. I have nothing coming so I deleted it.

I would delete it and not respond. (creepy, I agree )

Definitely a scam. I get those types of texts a lot. Recently, I got texts from some phone #, asking me if I was coming to pick them up. They texted me for 3 days about "coming to pick them up." I never responded and just deleted the phone #. Either it was a scam trying to phish my cell phone #, or someone got their person's phone # wrong when they sent their texts.

If you don't know who the text is from, always delete it to be on the safe side.
