I always feel like a hypocrite when I pass a hitch-hiker because I benefited greatly from it when I was younger. But I agree there are only certain rare low-risk situations when I will pick someone up. The empathy is there but is not enough of a factor to outweigh the safety issue.

It kinda rots, really - just another example of a few bad apples spoiling the barrel.

There was the day when hitchin was quite common and seldom, if ever, given a second thought to.
Like a number of responses already, I, too, am from that era. I did my fair share of hitchin, with a few ending results that weren't all that favorable, but left unharmed...just put the fear of God in me is all.

Anytime I see someone in trouble, though, I do what I can to offer help, outside of placing myself in any direct possible harm.
I have a daughter to finish raising and have to do what's required to ensure that. Besides, she's ALWAYS with me in the car and I'l lbe damned if ANYTHING is going to come in her harms way...not if I can help it, anyway.
