Can anyone explain why many websites have this annoying thing where you have to type in numbers and letters exactly as they appear or you won't get approved . Who are they trying to keep out. Can't they see the numbers as well???

There are these things called Spam Bots that go around websites and post spam and junk after registering with the site. These codes are to keep out the bots...I guess they can't type what they see?

I hate the ones that are illegible... you know, where the numbers and letters are distorted and there are lines running through them... I mean, is that REALLY necessary when other sites get by fine with font you can actually read and maybe a little line or two?

Those things are called CAPTCHAS and it is absolutely necessary to make them as hard to decipher as possible (so that only a human can) because people who spam are coming up with new ways to solve the CAPTCHAS with a program all the time.
There are whole buildings of people who solve CAPTCHAS for a living in places like India, where westerners who spam can hire them to solve them. Spamming is unfortunately still profitable.

I've actually not bothered with a site after entering what I swear was the correct code and just getting wrong over and over again.

it is a good idea to keep spam bots out, but when it is so impossible to read a person can't do it, i think it may defeat the purpose

If you cannot decipher a captcha, ther is an option to change to another and another...until you can finally get a picture you can figure out. It is an easy thing to deal with compared to impossible, half explained directions!

some of the captcha use a extra thing were you can hear it as well if your having problems
