of course they forgot the most important of all human inventions, Language, it is the ability to comunicate complex ideas with each other that is responsible for our development as a species.

The iPhone...... Are you kidding me.... Would be curious to know the age range of the survey takers if possible.

I would agree, Language, use of Tools, Electricity. All of which combined ALLOWED for the lightbulb. Some on here while great, have more, basic beginnings. Others are so intertwined that they could be combined into a common object. While yet others are debatable with other great things. Joseph Lister would be up there with his advancements in the medical community, whereas Penecillin's overuse has potentially helped to create "superbugs" which are immune to some anti-biotics, etc.

But the iPhone.

I am not sure how many of you have ever played the "Civilization" game series, but I find it interesting the order of scientific discovery:

Alphabet
Writing
Horsemanship
Religion
Chariots

and so on.

I would also add to my earlier post, the second most important human invention: Mathematics, which forms the basis of all our hard sciences.

a few more

Simple machines, like the Lever, The Wheel and the Pulley, are the basis of our modern engineering

The solid state transistor and the Mircochip, which form the basis of our electronics and computing.
Thanks for this!

I find the invention of roach killer pretty amazing, considering they can survive just about anything. Without it, I would be a dead woman!!!

Oh my god, I love the Civ games!! Sorry that was off topic.

I don't think I would chose anything from that list save the wheel and penicillin (medicine in general).

I could think of some things for the worst inventions list...

I can't believe -- birth control --is not on that list.

though if people would REALLY use it, then maybe it would be considered an all time invention

This list also depends on how you look at it. I mean, We as a species are more than able to succeed and live without certain inventions. Without certain items, we as a species may no longer be around due to disease or what have you.

Some things are too specific. Like someone mentioned the Civ games, it all starts with simple concepts that humans have learned to advance. A printing press was a great idea, but without language and simple tools, it would never have been around.

Some may argue that nature showed us fire, and we imitated it, but will still learned the power and how to control it. Without such we would have been frozen in time. Simple tools like the lever, inclined plane, corkscrew, pulley, These and other primitive tools allowed us to advance engineering and the ability to create objects which later helped the spread of mankind. It depends on who ask what is truly important. Am I thankful for my PC and my internet, Yes! I wouldnt be here. I wouldnt have met my wife, but is it something that has allowed for the species to live longer and not die off. I dont think so. Mankind continued to thrive over the last few thousands of years despite computers. Our Printing press was a form of a primitive PC, which again, came about from language and simple tools. It all depends on how deep you look at it.

#1 Invention - Human Ingenuity. Finding those ways to make it no matter what problems have been put in front of you to face.

But that came from aliens, so technically we didn't invent it.

I think the invention of the wheel would always be #1, then language and electricity.

I'm glad I can make at least one person laugh!

I've been watching a show on the History Channel called "Ancient Aliens" that gives the theory that aliens gave humans the tech to build the pyramids, or that they enslaved ancient civilizations into building them for use as power plants b/c they were stranded here and wanted to go home.

It was interesting.

Hey I think we forgot a very important one, one that should definately make the list of greatest inventions:

Duct Tape, you can repair anything with some initiative and a roll of Duct Tape.

The weaving loom...I am a weaver, and it is amazing to me how ancient people figured it out. Also, I just saw on one of the Discovery channels how the weaving loom was the forerunner of the computer!

I would also add pottery in the list of inventions. Pottery is the main indicator of the sophistication and advancement of many ancient civilizations.
