Hi,
Please read the poem that I have posted on my weblog/website here, consider how the meaning of it applies to you and then post your own "I Am" statement.

Here's mine:

"I may not be easily understood or seen as worthy to some,
but I am somebody
!"

I exist, I laugh, I cry, I worry, I try, I feel, I love, I trust, I care, I give, I receive, I am beloved of my Best Friend, I am silly, I am here in the present:

I am somebody.

Someone may have stolen my dream when it was young and fresh and I was innocent. Anger is natural. Grief is appropriate. Healing is mandatory. Restoration is possible.

I am somebody.

Adapted from a Jane Rubietta quote.

I am what I am
I am my own special creation

This is not to discredit your comment, but sometimes that statement is a coin of two sides.

There are times when we need to be able to acknowledge ourselves as "good" and "unique"
but there are, also, times when the use of that statement is a bit of a cop out. We use it to justify not trying or making the effort to take on and overcome a challenge. By saying that I am what I am, my own creation we're leaving the door open to allow shortcomings or negatives to hold us down.

The question comes back, "Sure you are what you are in your own creation, but is that someone who is in control or someone who is just floating along with whatever happens?"

This is why my thread is specifically in relation to making that claim that "I Am Somebody." Take a look at the poem I referenced. It is a statement of overcoming the challenges.

It's not just a statement of being. Instead by citing a challenge and replying to it that "I am somebody" it's a statement of empowerment. It's declaring "No! This will not hold me back. This will not keep me from overcoming a challenge!"

Many times when dealing with our mental health issues we have to take on the challenge that our condition will not stop us from overcoming it and achieving everything we are meant to achieve.

On a slight side note, I find it so uplifting that in my blog post I was making a declaration against being unemployed. So here I decide to create this thread and low and behold I get a job this week.

(((((Kayelless))))& (((((((Paddym))))))--Good point Kayeless. Though there are times when I have to stop trying to fight against the odds and be gentle with myself.
I have to keep myself safe, and let the intrusive thoughts pass. That is, until I can handle it. Takes time, and suffering to get back out to the light.

I love your threads--this being one of them...so positive!!! Yes, Empowerment!!!

Very glad you got your job!!! Congrats!!!! ------------theo

Postscript: I do not believe that I have total "control" over everything, My Bestest Friend does.
There are things you can change all on your own; true, but sometimes, it is beyond your control.
JMO--I have to let it be, and accept that all will be well-----also, little known fact: Nowhere in the Bible does it say "He helps those who help themselves"

----Ben Franklin wrote that.

"The Serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The Courage to change the things I can,
And the Wisdom to know the difference."-----------------I am Somebody!!!

Thank you for this inspiring thread!!!----theo

One of the things I've noticed about self-empowerment is being able to understand what one is capable of, but being wise enough to know how to use ones skills.

It's so important to understand ourselves well enough to know there are times when we just have to sit down and take a breather. To do so is a part of the empowerment process because we are allowing ourselves the necessary resources to build forward - otherwise we'd just run out of gas and only get so far.

I may not believe in the world you think I should, but I Am Somebody!

I am often misunderstood, often walked over, hurting from my past, yet I am sweet, empathetic, loving, kind hearted, outgoing, and adorable!!
