Do mice hoard stuff?

Do you think mice hoard cheese or are they keeping it safe like squirrels do with nuts, etc???

Or perhaps some do and some don't?!

I've had both mice and rats as pets and although they are both rodents, of course...lol, there is a difference between how they hoard.
But, to answer your question..yes, mice do hoard.

I'm guessing though, it depends on the circumstance, such as wild mice vs. domesticated. I'm sure the wild mice hoard more due to the fact that they have far less resources to depend upon, so once they do find supplies for their need, they will hoard as much as necessary.
I've found that domesticated mice, however, can only hoard what is provided to them...such as various items for their bedding and, of course, the food which is given to them.

When I've cleaned their cages, I notice the mounds they create within and underneath their 'homes' consisting of whatever they decide necessary, I guess.

I have had issues with wild mice in my home in the past and have found that they do hoard whatever they can get a hold of for bedding and food. It's amazing how resourceful they really can be, especially if female and establishing nesting for their babies.

Yes mice hoard...we have found a really good way of keeping them out of the house...leave all the leftovers in the garden bed near the front of the house...they then ignore the house while they're busy hoarding the food from the garden...

Most mammals that eat have an instinctual "hoarding" ability, some more pronounced than others, some constant, and some only triggered by situations where it is necessary.

Think of the human ability to store fat - if the human body suspects it is in a situation where it is starving everyday, or even some days(not sure what the magic number is, lol) it will begin to "hoard" calories and fat so that it always has an energy source. This is essentially no different than a mouse hoarding food. There are differences though - mice hibernate in most colder climates, and in warmer ones, food can be scarce anyways, so they hoard to survive. Because of this constant starving possibility in rodents, they do it constantly. If you took say, ten generations of mice, maybe more like fifty, and ALWAYS fed them constantly, you would likely notice that instinct begin to lessen. Hard to say without actually doing the experiment though.

In any hand, yes , indeed mice DO hoard. It is a leftover survival instinct from when they were non-domesticated(if you mean pet mice) or one they still require, for the life of something as small as a mouse and that eats what it does, is quite perilous all the time.

I know rats hoard. when we took up the floor boards to take out a defunct sewage line, I found a nest where the little so and sos had even horded money (coins) and a tea infuser (metal and shaped like a ball). Rodent home decorating? who knows! I still haven't figured out the rodent appeal! HUGGS

I put Easter eggs in the cupboard and the next day they had all been eaten by mice. Did you know that mice love creame eggs?

ahhh so they have sweet tooths!!! Too funny!

Mouse traps work much better with peanut (not that peanuts are a nut!) butter.

We sometmes bait the traps with milk chocolate, too. They REALLY like that. Problm is, I'm afraid I'll find one of my kids in the traps if I do it too often!

When we cleaned out my relative's house after several years of it being empty, we found big stashes of unpopped popcorn under the couch cushions, inside a hat on the top shelf of the closet, in drawers...

Maybe they were saving it up to watch a movie.

I've found mice nests containing the oddest items..things you'd never even think they'd want to take home. I've found erasers, leather, parts of candles, pen caps, hair, silk flower parts....the list goes on.

I think maybe much of what they hoard they use for nesting, while perhaps other things they take home thinking it can be eaten later.

Neither of my pet mice or rats liked those Yogie treats....odd.
