Hi, I am sorry your family members are being so mean to you. I had this problem with the people who raised me (I do not call them family b/c they do not fit my definition of the word family - caring, loving, understanding, etc.) until I cut them out of my life b/c they only made things worse.

I am not saying that is what you need to do, but know there are people out there who are on your side. And just b/c they are blood related to you doesn't make them family.
Thanks for this!

I'm sorry that your family members are not being supportive. Would they be willing to watch an educational video about OCD, if you could find one? Perhaps they would then understand what a serious disorder this is.

Sending you many hugs!

Hello kiki,

Welcome to PC. It is sad that your family don't take you seriously and I think it is something which can only make things worse for you not better.

Are you seeing a therapist and getting any help? That would be my priority, getting yourself the help that you need. The support here at PC is also something which can help you to feel that you have the backing behind you to know that you are not alone. Take care.

Greetings,

There are many mental health resources who can educate family members/loved ones of what you are truly going through. I hope you seek them out both on/offline.

Have a good one.
Thanks for this!

Hey thank you.Nope I tried to get them to go to my doctors appointments and read books on it but they laugh and say I just want attention and that makes me sick to not have support from them.

Kikki,

Sorry they won't listen. I had that problem too. It was my problem not theirs so why should they deal with it (was their opinion). So I found my own family that does support me and loves me for who I am. My family is friends and my fiance and his wonderful family!

I wish you the best. Keep posting, it does help.

Perhaps they are afraid becuase they do not understand. Perhaps they are just jerks. You need a phrase to respond to them without causing yourself anxiety but still making it clear that they are wrong. Something like, "I would appreciate your support through this, but I can't force you. I will just manage without you." Then just walk away. Say it again and again. Or you can vary it if you think of a couple of phrases.

DO NOT let them push your buttons. You are not responsible for their lousy behavior.

there's a great documentary called "No Kidding, Me Too" about dealing with mental illness. Good for them to see, but also good for you to watch.

Hang in there! Get support everywhere you can. You don't need people who continually pull you down.

There seems to be a stigma surrounding many metal illnesses. How often have you heard someone say, "I'm having a panic attack over today's exam." ugh. I always roll my eyes over that one.

Have you ever asked your family members if they would like to listen in on some of your therapy appointments? It might help give them an understanding of what you go through. Or maybe it'll just to help them realize that laughing is hurtful. Might be a good idea, ask your therapist what he/she thinks about all this.

Hope the group therapy goes well for you too. Good luck.

I'm sorry you had to go through that. I had to do something similar. So far I haven't had to get a lawyer involved, but worry every day that my "family" will come after me. Long story.

You are right though. We need to surround ourselves with people who are supportive and understanding. And sometimes that means adding to our family - whether it be friends, boyfriends, children, whatever. Thank you to all here who support me and everyone else.

Kikki - please know that you are not alone in this. we are here and we are listening.

Wecome, Kikki, and I'm sorry that you family just doesn't seem to get it. How long have your problems been going on? Some folks really need a long run on before they realize that this is not "just for attention." Some, as others have said, never really want to catch on. Hang in there. You might have to find other people who under stand. HUGGSSSS and hope you find some understaning here.
Thanks for this!

Hi Please Help,

Thanks for what u said about family being more than jus those who u are tied to by blood. I am already freaking out! about Christmas and Thanksgiving. Every year I spend holiday with my family and every year I am ignored, insulted, and misunderstood. AS of this morning!! I have been invited to spend Thanksgiving with very good, funny, nice people!!! a bit of a drive, but nonetheless I want to go. I am afraid I will instead be self destructive and go to my family's. Anyway, thanks for the reminder and I will now remember to bring this up in therapy tomorrow.

Kikki, you could ask him what is so bad about needing the kind of attention it takes for him to understand what you're going through? Sounds like selective attention defficit to me.
Thanks for this!
