He should have the whole place fumigated buy new beds and any other furniture in the rooms that have been affected I was reading about a member Nucking Futz who had a problem with them and she had to buy all new things But others have had problems with them too and because they do not just affect beds but all furniture with any kind of stuffing they would spread like wildfire

if people had protectors on their matresses and the bases the beds would not get infested Rhiannon has protectors on all beds just to be sure We do not have the bugs here but if they do get here we are protected and because they are covered and Rhiannon steams the beds every few months then airs them to dry properly not even dust or skin mites survive in there DJ has asthma now so Rhiannon keeps the beds and pillows as clean as possible to avoid problems for him

Where did this pestilence come from?

Bedbugs are a problem here too. They can get in people's luggage as they travel and spread to the different places they stay, because they hide not only in the beds and the upholstered furniture but under the mouldings and in the cracks in the floors as well. They come out at night and spread into bedding and suitcases, etc. Fumigation is reall the only thing you can do, and it may have to be repeated. This means that you may have to fumigate at home, too, and if you life in an apartment building, you neighbors my also have to. Sorry, hon. It's not just nEw York. These folks may have gotten them from the last place they stayed. HUGGS and I hope this works out.

I remember my grandmother talking about moving into a house where the bedbugs hid underneath the wall paper and it had to be stripped off and all the bedsprings were drug out into the yard and coal oil poured on them and burned.

Bed bugs have been around for a long time. In the us we had them pretty much gone but we banned the pesticide that killed them so well. People used to set the feet of their beds in bowls of kerosene so the bugs couldn't climb up. They do make bed risers that you put oil in. Also the mattress covers. Here they heat the apts to 140 degrees and have bed bug sniffing dogs.

Ugh I am sorry for this. I won't stay in anything but a high end hotel. Why do you think all the lower end motel/hotels are now advertising complete remodels? They had a bedbug issue and had to!!!

From what I've heard the best way is to hire a professional exterminator and they'll give you tips as well. You may have to get rid of the mattresses. Wash all bedding and clothes in hot water including pillows or you could put the pillows in the freezer for a couple days. Remove all clothes from the bedrooms and don't leave any on the floor...in fact minimize the bedrooms as much as possible. Store as much as possible of the newly washed items in those enclosed bags. If you're getting a new mattress, buy those totally enclosed mattress covers. My daughter allergic to mites, so I regularly steam the mattress with a clothes steamer or the doctors office recommended I iron the mattress.

I heard someone in New York bought some clothes at a nice store and it had bed bugs on them and then their house became infested. It's scary - makes me never want to stay in any hotel. SInce I'm talking about hotels....you know how every room has those glasses with a paper cover on them. Well they showed an undercover hotel camera of a cleaning woman and she was using a towel to wipe down all kinds of surfaces - she used that same towel to wipe the insides of the cups, then put a new cardboard cover on...EWWWWWW.

Ah, Lynn, my dear, if I told you about some of the things my poor immune system has had to take from me during all my habitat for humanity trips, Post Soviet Balkan expeditions, etc. you'd probably quarantine me together with Typhoid Mary It's wonderfull we can take as much as we can if other conditions are OK! But yeah, bugs are not on my list of favorite plagues. I'll take the frogs and hailstones any old day. (relatively speaking, please!)

Bed bugs are a real problem in Toronto too, so I'm super paranoid about them. Almost all the callers to the support line I work on have bed bugs adn it's pretty terrible. I've stopped shopping consignment because I'm so scared.

FYI, to help for prevention, a pest control guy once recommended for bedding plastic covers, not cloth, for mattresses and pillows and keeping any stored fabrics (linens, clothes, bedding) in plastic as well. The cloth made covers are fine for dust but not dust mites, lice, or bed bugs.

Over the years I was to stay at 2 very high end hotels, 5 stars, in Paris and in San Fran; both had to reschedule us before we got there b/c of bed bugs. No one is immune and cleanliness has nothing to do with it.

Sleep tight, and don' let the bed bugs bite.
Thanks for this!
