Why do you think we like others to hear about our troubles?
I think it's because we want people to know what we are going through, we want the situation to change, and we want attention. ![]() |

I think that, yes, attention is part of it. I also think that we want to know that our feelings are valid...
I guess that's why I don't talk about my feelings; I really don't want the attention. |

I agree that we possibly need attention - not in a bad way.
It helps to put your thoughts on paper - you often find yourself finding the answers yourself - and that automatically makes you feel better. Sharing with others makes the situation less scary, as you are no longer going through it alone

Honestly, I think to a large degree people crave sympathy.
Its kind of addicting to be the center of attention and have others reassure us. Of course, this isn't always the case. There are plenty of people who simply want relief from a tremendously hard time. But realistically, people are naturally self-centered to some degree. It just feels good to gain that level of attention sometimes. |

I think that most people just want to feel like they are not alone in this world. Mental illness has a way of segregating us from the norms of society at times. We also tend to "feel" like we are not "normal" and that we are not like other people. So why not congregate and share with others? There is much to be learned from those who suffer similar maladies as well as those who have moved forward and how they've accomplished that.
We are social creatures....we want connection with others for the most part. Granted, there may be times when we need some "me" time. Nothing wrong with that....it's called self care! We're allowed to do self care. If we don't, then how do we continue to give to others when our well runs dry? ![]() sabby |

To vent..to write it down.....that always makes me able to deal better when I read it on paper.... it doesn't seem as overpowering then!!

Well, RunningEagle, I think you may be starting out with a stacked deck. I think there are numbers of people who DON'T like others to hear about their troubles, though they have many. SOME of us have very good impulses: to want others to know what we're going through, as you say, and to want the situation to change and to want attention. I sincerely believe there are lots of mentally troubled people out there who AREN'T interested in exteriorizing, in telling others their troubles, in changing or in wanting attention. We here on PC are a self-selected group who DO want such things. Others, like Mr. Loughner, do not. Take care. ![]()

Only a select few know my struggles in life. I trust them because they know I don't like sympathy or being the center of attention. I prefer to be treated like the person I've always been, not some charity case.
I vent to my friends because I know they won't allow it to overburden them. It gives me comfort to know they know what is going on in my life, but I don't want it to cause any added pressure in theirs. I care just as much about them as they do about me. I can't change what is going on in their lives, and they can't change what's going on in mine - but it feels good to act as each other's sounding boards when times get rough. ![]() ![]() |
