"Human brains have shrunk over the past 30,000 years, puzzling scientists who argue it is not a sign we are growing dumber..."

Sure, sure.

actually, scientests have long stated that the key to intelligence in mamals was the surface of the brain, not its size. The more "folds" the brain has, the more data it can store. So while our distant ancestors had larger brains than we do now, they were much smoother on the surface.
Thanks for this!

How does one determine how corrugated ancient brains were? Usually the brains themselves are long gone.

Funny I read that article yesterday, though it was the Higgs boson article that really captured my attention.

The brain article at first had me skeptical, because brain size is so often associated with intelligence. I thought maybe the scientists were just trying to come up with excuses why its shrinking, that we really were getting dumber as a society. Cause you know, there's a dumbing down going on when you look at it in certain ways.

The brain folds though, throw a different light on the subject. But like Pachy asked, how do they know how the folds of distant ancestors were?
