We all know about stereotypes. It can get ugly. That's why I want to counteract it with some light-heartedness.

What stereotypes do you fit? What stereotypes are expected of you, but you don't fit?

Here are mine.

Stereotypes I fit:
  • I am a grandmother who knits, bakes cookies, and has cats.
  • I am intelligent with a large vocabulary and weak social skills. (Bonus, I wear glasses, too.)
  • I am female and unable to drive a car.
  • I am female and definitely a chocolate addict.

Stereotypes that don't apply at all:
  • I am a woman who does not enjoy watching The View, "chick flicks," or soap operas.
  • My husband couldn't care less about sports.
  • I am left-handed but have excellent penmanship, and I'm not all that clumsy.
  • In fact, my right-handed husband is far clumsier.
  • I am overweight but not into Big Macs or twinkies.

Meant to be funny. Please have at it; I hope you'll enjoy the game.
Thanks for this!

Stereotypes I don't fit...
I'm a woman, but I'm taller than most men, and when I've got into physical fights with men I've won far more often than I have lost. One man ended up in hospital.
I've got a diagnoses of asperger's or high functioning autism, but I'm so crap at maths it hurts.
I'm a loving and responsible mother, but I've got arrested more times than I can remember.
I grew up on a farm where I learned to kill hens, skin rabbits etc, but I'm a vegan.
I grew up in the British isles, but speak five languages well. (Most British people think that shouting loudly at foriegners is all the linguistic skills anyone needs.)
I'm a Christian who doesn't hate gays or Muslims.
Stereotypes I do fit.
I'm a woman who absolutely adores babies, and goes cuckoo over their cute, adorable, cuddly natures.
I'm an Irish woman who cooks enough to feed a small village with hardly any ingredients at all.
I do that Irish Momma thing, where if anyone even appears to threaten my baby I go out and pull their ears off.
I'm rubbish at spacial coordination (woman thing? dunno...)

I don't know what stereotypes I fit, but one thing that should enrage advertisers, especially on the Internet, is that whatever they do to track my preferences won't work; I have never bought anything on the Internet because of an advertisement. I actually don't even see the things! My eyes avoid them. It's called avoidance.

Same here, helped by the fact that I have no peripheral vision. That's the reason I can't drive, but it does have its advantages.

I'm a totally gentle soul, I'm ridiculously passive, the least little thing makes me cry, I have such a tender heart that if I find a roly-poly in the house I carefully take it outside and try to relocate it in the best roly-poly looking spot I can find...but my favorite TV show is SVU: Special Victims Unit! My #2 favorite TV show is CSI Miami!

Thanks, Lovebirds. This is kind of fun...

Stereotypes I fit:
I am a woman who likes to talk about feelings and loves cats.
If I go out I gotta take like 20 trips to the bathroom. What is it with women and their small bladders?
Female... and love to browse any store for things for the home: sheets, towels, dishes, baskets.
I like to cook and shop for groceries.
I'm a lesbian that loves to visit hardware stores, crafts fairs and stores that sell crystals.

Stereotypes that don't apply at all:
I am a female but I am an excellent driver. I've never had a ticket or accident and people even compliment me on my parallel parking.
I am a girl but don't wear skirts all that much.
I am a lesbian... But not really into the Indigo Girls or K.D. Lang. (I'd rather listen to classical).
I love beer and spicy food.
I don't like coffee drinks. Just a strong cup with milk (no sugar).
I'm an artist, but I love chemistry.
I'm a girl but I like snakes and beetles.
I'm a cat-lover but I also like dogs.

Fitting:

I'm a nerd (NERD ALERT! Muggle Higgie Nigen!) that wears glasses with an above A average.
I'm a male teen that cracks up at the slightest fart.

Not Fitting:

I'm a white person that isn't racist. (Stereotype IMO)
I'm a man that gets board at sport events.
I'm a teenager that won't dance the bedroom tango until I get married.
I'm a teenage boy that gags at the sight of a naked body. (both genders)
I can see somewhat well without my glasses.

I've thought of some more.

I fit:
  • I am a woman who is afraid of snakes and spiders.
  • I grew up in Kentucky, don't like to wear shoes, and have lived in a house that had no indoor plumbing.
  • As a woman I like to watch TV shows about fashion or interior design, while my husband would rather watch Cops or Ice Road Truckers or something else dripping with testosterone.
  • I am a woman who prefers to wear dresses, likes makeup and jewelry, and keeps my hair long.

I don't fit:
  • I am a woman who is not afraid of mice.
  • I am a mother who has never once wished my children were still babies.
  • I grew up in Kentucky but I have never met anyone who owns a moonshine still, nor does anyone in my acquaintance work in a coal mine.
  • As a woman over 40, I *still* keep my hair long, and have not cut it into some teased, layered, oversprayed helmet-head style. And no, long hair doesn't "drag my face down" or any other stereotypical thing people say about older women with long hair. My hair is healthy, not witchy.
  • As a woman who enjoys interior decorating, I am not into anything pink, frilly, or lacy. I picked red and yellow as wall colors. And I call them red and yellow, not "cranberry" and "candlelight."
  • I grew up Southern and don't worship Elvis. I don't dislike him either, but a lot of my family thinks I'm awful because I just don't care one way or the other.

Stereotypes I do fit

*I am a female that likes to fill my house with candle and incense, and I'll walk for one hour to a spot to pick flowers (there are jonquils that grow in a mass this time of year but it's a loooong walk to get to, and I'll pick as many as I can hold).

*I dream about meeting 'the one' and expect him to be perfect for me and we'll have a great home and the best relationship and a dog named Max and everyone will be jealous of our perfect lives.

*I am terrified of the dark and ghosts.

*I whinge and complain about everything. But I'm perfect. It's everyone else that's crazy.

*I am a pet owner that talks to my animals like they understand me when I tell them 'you've eaten already, no more! Oh okay...'

*I have an extremely dysfunctional family that drives me insane.

Stereotypes I do not fit

*I am a vegetarian and I DON'T care if you eat meat, and am extremely sick of people sticking it in my face like I'm going to run away and have a cry.

*I LOVE snakes and rats.

*I come from a family that can have a very white Australian racist attitude, but I am EXTREMELY anti homophobic, xenophobic, racist, blasphemous. Just very anti-anti really.

*I am a female that is willing to take someone on if they mess with me, but I’m not a bogan that goes looking for a fight or prides myself on having attitude.

*I’m a virgin by choice but I’m not religious

*I’m 23 and I don’t drink and smoke weed and go to clubs every weekend.

Sure, why not...

On the one hand
  • i am a black chick that just LOVES big earrings - sparkly, hoops, squares/hearts/triagles, and yes i have a pair of doorknockers that are gold and silver
  • i am attached to my mp3player blasting music all the time - also of jamaican descent so I LOVE REGGAE!! YEA YEAH!
  • i did grew up in a dysfunctional household with fighting and have had the cops come to the house
  • i love, love, LOVE, chocolate
  • and im Canadian, love our four vibrant seasons of the year, and love poutine too
On the other hand
  • I have never smoked weed
  • I have my own hair; if you ask you can touch it; and do not understand the whole "rocking a weave" thing at all...
  • some have called me an Oreo in the past - black on the outside and white on the inside - because i don't "sound" or "act" black
  • i have no baby daddy drama. i don't date (long story). I'm 25 years old and in my current work with children, i have had kids ask once in a while "where is your daughter" because i am the same age as some of the parents...
  • i am tall too, but suck at basketball. A new teacher tried to set up a team at my old elementary school when it was merged with another and i went from being the "token black kid" in class to "hey, there's enough for a basketball team (about 11 of "us")". In the entire season, we won like 2 games and i played a total of 7 minutes...
...hey, this was actually refreshing. Like unloading a whole pile of dead weight, or popping a baloon and releasing all that hot air...or something. I think i'm making sence...

for this
