My 2year old went back to his Cardiologist today, to check on his heart defect. The good news is, it's unchanged, the hole didn't get bigger. (Although the doctor said that it's starting to affect his heart, and that the right side of his heart is starting to stretch out.) He said we'll do the surgery to close the hole in two years, unless something dramatic happens.

But we still don't have any answers as to what causes his cough, and why he turned blue twice now. That's the frustrating part. My son's regular doctor already ruled out everything she could think of.

For the first time you can open your eyes
And see the world without your sorrow
Where no one knows the pain you left behind
And all the peace you could never find
Is waiting there to hold and keep you
Welcome to the first day of your life

Just open up your eyes as I lay you down tonight
Safe on the other side
No more tears to cry

I'm glad to hear that the hole hasn't increased in size, but the fact that the right side of his heart is "stretching" out is scary as he is so young.

There are some heart medications that have a side effect of a cough that many people experience. Is he on any heart medication right now?

As far as the turning blue issue, this would be a sign of low oxygen levels in the blood, called Hypoxemia or Hypoxia. Does he experience these blue periods at rest or after certain activities and how long does it take him to recover and be a normal color.

Just so you know, I'm a Cardiac Nurse. I'm no Cardiologist, but I figured, if you felt like sharing, I could offer you my thoughts and you could discuss them with your Son's Cardiologist if they seemed to fit with your Son's issues.

I wish the best for your family.

Thank you for your reply! My son is not on any medication for his heart, only on Zyrtec for allergies. The cough mainly pops up when he's active, running around and such. That's why everyone thought it's his heart.

The turning blue happened twice when he was crying. He wasn't crying hard, the second time he was just fussing because he didn't want to go to bed. He didn't have trouble breathing or anything that would have explained the turning blue.

I googled "Congenital heart defects in children" and in a few of the articles I read "
Repeated episodes of cough" is mentioned as a symptom of a heart defect, so he is coughing because of the heart defect.

If you can give the medical term used for his heart defect it may be possible to have a better search.
