in my diet, so I added ketchup to my mashed potatoes. Not bad. I continue my quest for eating cheaply yet nutritiously. I bought the store brand ketchup to put on scrambled eggs, but I find it helpful for perking up other things, too -- plus it's a fruit or a vegetable, depending on who you ask!
Thanks for this!

Happy you like ketchup. Try to buy in season veggies and fruits plus carrots and some veggies are low priced to begin with. I make this creamy veggie soup with carrots, broccoli, cauliflower (6 cups of veggies), chicken or vegetable broth and onions thickened with milk and flour - its very delicious. You can also buy those green storage bags that extend the life of fruits and veggies ...they actually work. Bananas that are past their eating point can be used for muffins or banana bread or frozen to use later in smoothies.

Hey, as of the early 1980's, it's LEGALLY a vegetable, this I know, Ronald Reagan told me so! And his recipes using ketchup just might be the real reason Mark Bittman no longer writes his food column full time at the New York Times, but I'm just speculating...

Love that!! Really, is it a "vegetable"? Cool!

I also love that you are doing the best you can with what you've got (((Icecreamkid)))--it is laudable!!!--Pax, theo

Because the Republicans wanted to count it as providing a vegetable in school lunches... there was a big stink about it!

Beware though, ketchup has loads of added sugars and salts, check the ingredients and nutritional facts on the bottle.

All things in moderation, eh? I don't eat enough ketchup or sugar or salt to be worried about the amount of salt and sugar in ketchup.

You were joking about the ketchup, right?

Anyway, you can make your own at home and control the sugar involved.

I'd list an example, but I need 10 posts - so you will have to browse the web for recipes like I just did.

Ketchup is made from tomatoes, which is actually a fruit. *taps nose*
