Is it OK to spend 3 hours doing something completely nuts?
We have a mom cat and 2 kittens that come around the back of our apartment. (There were 5 kittens but something happened to the other three). I thought they were gone - but last week the two kittens came back and knocked on my porch door. Well, they tapped on it, but they got my attention! It was pretty amazing. I guess they remembered the house where they had food before.
Anyway, it's getting cold here now. Very cold. We have been feeding them everyday and have been trying to "trap" them in a covered cat-carrier, to no avail. It also wasn't very warm, and kept getting wet. So tonight I took a large air-conditioner box and decked it out. I covered it with contact paper, garbage bags, tape, etc. Then I put the carrier inside with comfy blankets and cut a small hole at the bottom so they could go in and out. I felt like I was back in 6th grade doing a project for class. I can't believe how long it took. Eek. But I suppose I could have just as easily watched a bad movie. I feel crazy!But... I just want them to be warm until we can trap them and get them to the no-kill shelter...

My vet offered to let me borrow a humane catch cage. Probably would only catch one cat at a time. I ended up buying my own cage though.

So sweet of you to care for the babies.

I think it's better than okay...I think it's wonderful Have you spoken to anyone from the shelter? Chances are good that they have live catch cages available or know where to borrow them. There are groups and shelters here who use/loan the traps for feral cat population control. The cats are trapped and then spayed/neutered and returned to the colony.
You're very fortunate to have a no-kill shelter and even moreso to have one that isn't at capacity. If you've talked to the shelter they may have told you that the cat and kittens may not be adoptable. It isn't easy to "humanize" a feral or semi-feral kitten and next to impossible to do it w/ a grown cat. Whatever happens, I think you're doing a very good thing. Far more than most would do. Best of luck to you and the kittens

You're not crazy. The kitties need help and you are helping. My sister collects neighborhood cats and gets them spayed and neutered then puts them back out. She makes "houses" for them on her porch when it gets cold. She found someone who spays and neuters real cheap since she does so many. You are an angel for doing that.
