I was searching the internet for answers to help me cope with my procrastination when I found PsychCentral.

Now I spend hours procrastinating talking to y'all but I do enjoy it here.

I saw a quote - No wasted time that is enjoyed is ever wasted.

But...

I still...

procrastinate.

Yoda - that's a John Lennon quote: "time you enjoy wasting is not wasted". So true - we never give ourselves a chance to slow down and just 'be'. I too am a procrastinator, but a lot of it has to do with racing thoughts. I can sit and try to figure out what I need to do each day but then I get caught up with "if I do this first, then I'll have to do that, and then what about this? But if I start with the other first then I'll have to do this or that, etc etc etc." Over and over until I find the day is almost gone. I really drive myself crazy!

You procrastinate doing other stuff by cleaning?!???

Oh, wow! Cleaning the clutter is one of the things I most often procrastinate to NOT do!

Could you send some of your cleaning motivation my way? My house would thank you.

For me "analysis = paralysis" because it causes the procrastination and perfectionism.

I saw this on a bumper sticker once, loved it being a procrastinator myself:

"I remember reading somewhere about an organization called Procrastinators Anonymous. I think they had been in existence for some years but had never gotten around to having a meeting."
-Unknown Source

I get too distracted by so many things that are more interesting, or my mind plays a number on me as well is the other side like mentioned above as I analyze it, which delays things: how will I get something done and the organization, how to perfect it, and sometimes even fear of what it will mean once something is accomplished. But due to some past repercussions for having this motto:

"If it weren't for the last minute, I wouldn't get anything done,"
~Author Unknown

now I will start at least SOMEWHERE in a small piece even if it is not well-planned for a bit of momentum in hopes it will go somewhere sooner than later, or wait until tomorrow.

Hi Penny,
I spend so much time analyzing a situation, looking at the possibilities, then trying to perfect the solutions for the outcome, that making a decision sometimes becomes impossible as I come up with too many possibilities. I become afraid of choosing the wrong solution and am concerned to act on just one thing that I have may not have foreseen all the consequences and outcomes. It is a form of "contingency planning". In the end, analysis leads to paralysis for me because in the course of all the figuring, I have accomplished ABSOLUTELY nothing (procrastinating) but a lot of useless plans, and yet still unsure of the best decision to make (perfectionism) and still paralyzed to act despite all the options. I have learned that any decision now is better than no decision at all, but it is something I struggle with every moment of the day.

My major procrastination problem concerns snail mail. I don't pick it up very often. I just can't get myself to do it. I live in a condo, it's not that far away, I just Keep. Putting. It. Off.

All my neighbors know, because the mail lady puts nasty notes on my box, then on my door. Eventually she dumps a laundry-basket-size box of mail outside my condo. Ugh.

Embarrassment ought to cure me, but it doesn't. I don't understand me. Why do I put myself through this?

I belong to another community dedicated to helping us help each other deal with the clutter and squalor in our houses. Someone recently posted this link to a timer that can be helpful in completely tasks combined with reward. I haven't used it yet but I think it could be useful.

Procrastination for me is a serious problem that negatively affects my life in a big way. I was hoping someone might offer ideas to change this behavior. There are several references on that link that look very solid and reasonable. I have not read all of them completely yet but I have linked them in a word document to save and I will share with my son too.

They referenced a book that sounds like a good resource, "End Procrastination Now!: Get it Done with a Proven Psychological Approach". I have now ordered the book from Amazon and look forward to reading it.

If I can learn to manage procrastination it will be life changing. I have so many goals that I am unable to achieve because I procrastinate.

I have hope to change!
I'm really serious about this and I want my friends here to push me toward this and ask me what tasks I have done. I think I will put together a list of what I want to accomplish and ask for help to prioritize and support to actually do it.

Let's keep this thread going with ideas and support each other. I appreciate you all.
