Thank you, KeepGoing, for your accurate portrayal of how sagging started. Contrary to very persistent popular belief, it did NOT start in prison as a signal of availability, as my late step-father who worked in the prison system made clear. He said if he or his co-workers had seen anyone dressed like that, they would have been confined. I'd heard the poverty explanation before, but it never answered why they continued to wear baggy clothes as adults. Now I know. But I don't quite understand it. I totally get not being ashamed to be poor, but I don't get choosing to advertise it through ill-fitting clothes. I say this as one who grew up poor and lived in subsidized housing.
Note that one of my dislikes (yes, I should have used that word, you're correct) is "ripped or stained clothes in public, when the person can afford better." For example, I believe we should wear our best when going to church. If our best clothes happen to be rags because that's all we can afford, then we're still wearing our best. I've been there. By the way, I do wear sweats at home, to keep my legs warm if I'm cold. Sometimes I even wear them going out, running an informal errand like grocery shopping. But then I make sure I'm color-coordinated so I look merely casual, not sloppy. My dislike of hoodies is purely subjective. It isn't the hoodie's fault. I just don't like the look, that's all, and I put it in the same category with asymmetrical necklines which I don't like either. |

Timgt5, I'll bite, in sort of an answer to your question (more questions than answers) about why we wear neck ties...
I don't know why they wore them, but weren't the Chinese the first recorded ones to wear neck ties, something like 220 B.C.? They have been documented on soldiers. Fashionably though for the style we have now, would it be the Croations as a status issue and out of rebellion?

I really appreciate men and women who've decked out in their best refinery ... Especially like to watch the Kentucky Derby to see all the fancy dresses, hats, tux's & tails ... I've rather enjoyed seeing all the kids dressed up for prom too ... So pretty and handsome ...
But, none of that for me ... Nuh-Uh & No Way ... I'm just your basic jeans and tees kinda gal ... especially once they've become well worn and broken in ... ![]() |

I shop at Goodwill and the other thrift stores in town. I find many beautiful items, often new with tags or looking like new, at rock bottom prices -- these stores are jammed when there are sales--yes, thrift stores have sales! Anyone struggling to live on limited means should consider checking out their local thrift stores.

I think it is refreshing to look inside people's minds and know their likes and dislikes. I mean, afterall, they will HAVE those ideas, even if they don't tell me. What people think and feel, will affect me, even if they don't say it aloud. I mean in real life. I'd rather know what they thought instead of treating me weird and I don't know why...

I don't dislike any clothing except the slogan t-shirts that say very racist and sexist things. In fact, seeing people dress how they think expresses themselves is very interesting!
I love hand-knitted jumpers, though. Favourite garment of all time, for me. |

Ok answer to the necktie question
Neckties were originally invented because dress shirts worn by the upper classes, way back in the day did not have buttons to close them completly, the tie then was a piece of cloth designed to cover the remaining bare area in the middle of the chest and stomach. They were worn with the bottom actually tucked into the pants. Of course as time progressed and buttons came into being the tie remained as an ornamental symbol of the upper classes. |

I loved self adorned jeans. Jeans that were individualized by patches or badges or artwork done on them. It made the garment unique to the wearer.

I really like "screen" tees with cartoon characters on them. I sometimes like funny or ironic sayings also, but I don't want people constantly looking at my chest...lol.
I kinda "hate" non-casual attire that's worn out in public places like the bank, grocers or the park. I mean, it's like Stacy London and Clinton Kelly are starting a trend to make people look like they're going on to the runway just picking up a few items at Target! hahaha

It's warming up and so some women are taking the opportunity to wear the skimpiest tops possible. I don't think showing that much skin in the office is appropriate and can't imagine how it can be comfortable since management has the air conditioning set to the "frostbite" setting.

Last time I checked, guys in skinny jeans weren't sexy and SI was not a fashion statement. Anything preppy or too-overdone for men. I like guys that look a bit rugged.

I hate fashion stores that have their store name plastered over all of the clothing they sell. Aeroposte is one of them.

And I agree on the skimpiness at work. Anyone who refuses to look professional on the job has no room to complain about not being taken seriously. Sometimes I laugh at people with all these extreme piercings, tattoos covering every visible inch of their skin, giant rainbow-colored mohawks, surgically implanted devil horns, etc., wondering why they didn't get the job they applied for. Maybe if they stopped looking ridiculous? |

I was never one for body piercings or tattos. I have been intrigued by it on others, but I will never pierce or permanently place something on my body that cannot be removed. Simply because my moods swing so much, I may not like the tat the next week lol.

![]() Maybe... But then again I hate skinny jeans in general ever since all the stick-thin white boys decided to start sagging them. White boys can't sag. But we can pull off dreads. Who knew?
