Yesterday I started to chop down a tree that's in the way of a new fence I want to put up on the farm. Got about halfway through the tree and got the bright idea to pull it down. I figured it was cut in half it should just break off right? Uh no. Hooked a tow chain around the tree and wrapped the other end around the axel of the truck. Tree did not break off, instead the roots started to pull out of the ground. Well, dang! Figured all I'd have to do then was chop of the exposed roots. That was fine for dealing with the tree. The problem was that the roots were wrapped around the water main going to my house! Snapped the danged pipe in two. OK, shut the water off at the pump and see how to go about solving the problem. I spent the rest of the afternoon and evening digging to expose the broken pipe and chopping away at the roots. By 7:30 last night I couldn't see what I was doing and was being eaten alive by mosquitos. Came home from work tonight and finished the job. I did the happy dance when I turned the water back on and discovered that the pipe is holding. Next time I decide to get "smart" about something like this I'm gonna remind myself how much extra work my "short cut" cost me!  Now that I not only have water, but also have HOT water I am going to go soak my poor aching body in a hot shower! |

Sounds like something I would do lol! At least you have it fixed. Look at it this way those roots could have caused a problem latter on, you just took care of it in advance! lol!

well at least the pipes weren't damaged so that's a plus... what is it with us country people and screwing up cutting/trimming trees? I had the genius idea of using a ladder to get to the higher branches of a tree that were hanging down onto the road... needless to say a branch knocked me right off the ladder after it was cut, thank god for nice soft grass lol. According to my friend I should have climbed it and tied myself on... who has time for that
 ?

Glad I'm not the only one who pulls this sort of thing Dennis. And the pipes were damaged when the tree came up roots and all. Snapped the pipe in pieces. Didn't have water for a day as a result.
