You're very industrious Patty, I doubt you would sponge off anyone. Besides which we will need art after the apocalypse too.

Here's a video of cheap canned foods with the longest shelf life. I thought this was worth sharing.
Thanks for this!

We plan to retreat to our basement, and will defend with firearms. My dilemma concerns beggars. I think I would feel horrible if a family straggles by and asks for food. My H says to have extra cans of whatever (chili, canned fruit,p-butter?). I usually don't buy off-brand or "dented" cans but I just might. If all else, that would be the last things we resort to eating. I probably should get some of those teenie can openers, p38s(?) if I'm giving someone a can of peaches.

I think my H thinks it's dumb. I believe he feels it may be unsafe to give food away in a crisis.

I want a vacuum sealer! I want to package whole meals in one package. Like one might have everything in there for chili beans. The one cup of dry beans along with the exact amount of salt and spices. Or rice with freeze dried veggies and spices. I'd better have water, though!

I plan to die of very very very old age before any apocalypse happens. You know something? Many of those so called survivalist boy scout types will be the first ones jailed in the event of a true cataclysmic tragedy.

Many of these guys will begin thinking they have some inalienable right to 'run things' merely because they own some skills, equipment, a few heavy caliber guns and the 'right' attitude.[In reality, all that will marginally enable them to look after themselves and not likely anyone else.]

I find this stuff hilarious. There are guys who pray for something to happen so their saviour fantasies are fulfilled. God help us to be run by the likes of some of these guys. Real life will have them curbed pretty quick by those with the real skills to reorganize. You can bet the self-styled paramilitary types won't be liking that. That's when more tragedy would erupt and those with the inflated power tripping boy scout mentalities will start****ing things up worse than they already are. Nothing like a bunch of undisciplined and traditionally govt. hating 'survivalists' with weapons to frig up common sense.

They have a neat hobby sure. And the knowledge of surviving is practical in many ways. The things some of the hard core folks envision will not happen the way they picture it. It won't be some movie script. I'll bet a curiously high number of these guys will develop high blood pressure or have it in spades already. Due to the stresses of planning to save the country or their own piece of it. Yeah I'm exaggerating and sounding pretty cynical but I loathe this stuff when it gets extreme. Pardon me...I don't get riled easily but some of these groups are quite removed from reality. Really. And I don't much like the reports that many of the organized types are a little on the white power bandwagon...or at least trailing behind it. Enough said. Sorry Seeker. It's a good thread. Things like this are important on a realistic level. It's the AK-47 militaristic hardons that irk me. I just had to say what I thought. Maybe a good thing I'm not in a bar right now. In some places this discussion would cause dances in the parking lot. Which only proves my opinion on the diplomatic skills of our 'saviours' in the 'brave new world.'

Really sorry Seeker...it's a rant...feelin' the 'polarity' tonight it seems. But I'll post it...incongruities, bullshoot and all. I always felt strongly about this. I had to blow up here. Perhaps I should be spending more time on helping you proper with practical suggestions. Again apologies.

Oh damnit.... Hey Timgt5...that crack about the AK guys was not a dig directly at you. It's for the hardcore survivalist 'take back the country' types. I'm betting you're not one. To that degree anyway.

I understand, and no I am not one of those folks you describe, I was just being pragmatic.

We all would like to think it could never happen to us, but as a sociologist once pointed out, we are nine missed meals away from complete anarchy, that is how fragile civilization truly can be.

I also feel that the vast majority of people do not desire to harm their fellow person, but anytime there is a really bad situation there is that small element of folks that will try to use it to their advantage.

Have you seen the new TV show "Revolution" its about what would happen if suddenly our electricity and tech failed. The scenario that followed a decade later is as you described with militias ruling the land and insurgents fighting for freedom.

Hi Tim, thanks for the note. I don't watch TV these days but the scenario in the show you describe has been a common theme in a lot of apocalyptic storylines both in cinema-land and written fiction. Has been for a long time. Which makes me curious on how the mindset of these groups evolved. They seem to have gotten pretty popular these last few decades. Anyway I have a substantial glob of bile for the mentality that wistfully wishes for things to happen so they can finally go play soldier/saviour/judge and jury. Not to mention advocating their own warped pseudo-political agendas. This idiocy is a pet peeve times 10.

Again, it's just those survival extremists and the nasty subgroups that seem to infiltrate them that make me heave. The hardcore survivalist 'lifestyle' is being pursued as some romantic idealistic vision that damn well ain't based on a decent grip with reality. But you'll never get them to see that. I'd be hunted as a heretic I suppose...and my pelt hung as a mute warning to others in a burned out town square...*grin*

Seriously though...this stuff is a truer insanity. But enough of that...I've done hijacked this thread a bit too much.
