Hi,
I am new to this board. I just recently was approved for disability and have been without a stable place to live for a year and a half. I have been looking for apartments and have been having a lot of problems. Mainly because of how much I am getting it's not super low but def not 3x the rent usually.

I have been so freakin stressed because my money is just slipping away and still no place to live.

Today I went and met w/a lady at an apartment and I had told her previously I was on SSDI. When she arrived she said "oh your on disability but you look fine". I said " I know, thanks". I knew after that she was trying to get me to spill. After viewing the apartment, I loved it and can afford it, but it will be tight. I filled out the application (no fee) and then she said "I want to ask you a personal question. What are you on disability for"? She said it in a way that was very much curious and nosy but also leary of me". However, in my desperation I gave her a generalized answer: depression. I was so upset at myself because I did not know how to handle the situation. This is illegal what she just asked and I knew it.

My question: How can I inform this lady (who barely speaks english) that what she did was wrong. Honestly I am so angry at myself right now I should have taken the app and walked right out put she seemed clueless or else just playing that card to get the info. Ugghhh I dont know what to do. I wish I could just send her a letter explaining legalities but I dont know where I would send it. As she lives off site... maybe I should ask for address afterall that IS completely legal....

rant over.

I think AFTER I got the apartment and was comfortably moved in -- I would just talk to her, and nicely inform her that she cannot ask that question of people who apply for residence there. That it is illegal, and she could get into trouble. Just tell her that you're informing her of this because you don't want her to get sued. (even tho you'd like to wring her neck )

She SHOULD know about this if she's a landlord or manager!!! And she probably does, but just the fact that you didn't "look" disabled probably got the best of her. She's gonna get into big trouble if she keeps this up.

I'm sorry you ran into this. I hate it when people give us the "look" because we don't look disabled. I'm a spinal patient, and there are days when I DON'T limp cause the meds work - and then there are other days i can barely walk. But the days I don't limp, I get some interesting looks, and it's maddening.

I wish you all the best! I hope you enjoy your new place and don't have to deal with this woman much. God bless and take care. Hugs, Lee
