several times now, i have encountered very rude people in public places. tonight, i was coming home on the NYC subway during rush hour. the subway stairs were crowded with people going up on the left and down on the right. i have two packages and wanted to hold on to the handrail. halfway down the stairs, a woman is standing there talking on her cell phone. i say to her, "excuse me, can i get by?" she answers, "walk around me, i'm on the phone." it's a crowded stairway, there is barely room to walk around her fat body. we end up in a shouting match. finally, i have to walk around her. it never occurs to her that a busy public stairway is not the place to take a cell phone call. she could care less about causing a dangerous situation to everyone else. i walk away but am angry.
on my way home, i stop in a hardware store and ask to buy some pepper spray. i want a way to defend myself against people who would put me physically in danger with their public irresponsibility. i am told that the sale of pepper spray in NY state is illegal. what kind of place is this that i can buy a gun to defend myself by not pepper spray?? |

Didja ask if they carry cattle prods?
![]() ![]() I'm sorry you encountered such a lack of common courtesy. If it had been me, I would have been tempted to stop in my tracks directly behind her and say "No thanks. I'll wait til you're through talking on the phone....are you almost finished.....how about now....what about now. Hurry up, I gotta pee REALLY bad! Would you mind if I pee'd on your shoes?" ![]() |

There's too many people and some people just think the rules don't apply to them although there are no set set of rules it's called courtesy, which not many seem to follow or even care

Why not tell her the truth? "I can't, I'm disabled. Please move." In a loud voice. Also, "You're not from around here, are you?"

I have written to my government asking them to issue me a stainless steel meat cleaver and the right to be able to use my arbitrary judgment to be legally free to decapitate anyone I see fit. That lady would've lost her head.

I suppose I could have said, "You are creating an unsafe situation by blocking the stairs. Do I have to call a cop or are you going to move and make your phone call in a place that is safe for everyone?" Still, I doubt she would have moved. You can never find a cop when you need one. Now I have a good reason to go to New Jersey - I can buy pepper spray there. |

I second the above, people can really be a-holes sometimes and can really ruin your day. It is hard in the heat of the moment to be rational when confronted by such nastiness in other people. It is real shame folks have become so self centered and inconsiderate of others, sorry to hear this happened you my friend.

I agree too, This annoys me a lot, I happen to be polite and say excuse me please but it happens to fall on deaf ears, I have high anxiety when out so it really doesn't help at all but when people do it to annoy others and don't care for other people it makes me angry, I am sorry this happened to you unhappy

I've never understood why it's so important to talk then and there as opposed to moving somewhere else that is a bit quieter and less likely to get bumped into or shouted at. I've always wanted to grab their phone and say something like, "Ohhh baby, that feels soo good, don't stop, it's even hotter with people listening to us and that kinky boss of yours". It should get them to move to wherever they were headed without looking back.
