Is dumpster diving illegal? Like in the back of restaurants? And if so, does anyone have any idea on which restaurants would be the safest to go to? I mean, I know the basic common sense stuff about what's bad to eat, I just wanted to know which restaurants would be less likely to make someone sick.

Hello, Hatter08. Sorry, I doubt anyone may provide an authoritative response with such limited information.

I saw someone get arrested once for dumpster diving. I am not sure what they accused them of or what happened, but I would be careful.

Yeah, I was really just curious if anyone knew if I could get in trouble for it. I didn't expect much in anything else, just whether it was illegal or not.

I don't know if it's legal or not, but it certainly is dangerous. A homeless man used to sleep in the dumpster behind A C-Store I used to work at and he ended up crushed to death in the garbage truck early one morning as he didn't wake up and get himself out in time. Ever since then I've often wondered how many people this happens to every year.

With that being said, I'm sorry you're having a rough time, and I'm hoping it doesn't last too long. I think it's sad that as prosperous as this country is that some people can't even get the basics they need in order to survive. It's downright criminal.

If you're hungry, I'd look for help from a local shelter first. Or, go into a place of business and ask to see the manager. Explain to them that you're hungry and broke and ask if they have any food they're about to throw out that they can give you.

That way you'll get the food before it even hits the dumpster. They may ask you to do a mundane task like washing dishes or sweeping and mopping or even taking out the trash in exchange, but that would be better than going after food that's contaminated in the garbage dump.

I agree with Pfrog. There is just too much bacteria in and around the dumpster. It can make you very sick.

I used to work in the food industry. Please don't risk taking food from the dumpster. I'm not going into details and gross people out, but all sorts of stuff can happen to that food before it goes in the dumpster! As others suggested, go to a shelter or food bank or ask resturant management if you could have mis-makes or the like.
Thanks for this!

Some people do it because they see food waste as an environmental issue. They are called freegans. Personally I would be too afraid of germs, so I go to the plasma center for money and eat a lot of noodles and cottage cheese.

For the sake of gentle debate, what if the trash/rubbish is in the public right-of-way?

Do you think a hungry person who is homeless and shuns shelters is going to worry about bacteria?

However.... when I place my dumster by the side of the road..... I do not expect anyone to go thru it.... my thought for today - come and knock on the door... and if there is anything to eat... I will feed you!!! Just don't dive into the dumster.... because you may not be as lucky ;[ Here is the country.... you might get shot

That's pretty much exactly what I was thinking. And, Karoliinareddish, I wasn't going through someone's dumpster just the ones behind restaurants and convenience stores. I found some edible stuff in one of them and I also heard that KFC will give you any leftovers before they throw them out since they make everything together so I'm gonna try and ask them later today, it'll be easier to do once it cools down around here.

((P.S. Notz - are you into the Persona video game series? That's where your avatar is from and I am a fan of the game series so I was just curious.))
