My reminder reminds me that tomorrow, February 2, is Groundhog Day. Probably only in the USA, though.

My guess is they will stay curled up snug in their warm burrows, and not see their shadow.

Well, Punxsutawney Phil will be yanked out of his comfy hole to tell us if winter's hanging around for another six weeks or not. Visit his official site at http://www.groundhog.org/ and get his Prediction Signup to receive his prediction in your email at http://www.groundhog.org/prediction-signup/.

Just one more exciting event!

Comment heard this morning on CBS radio: "A thousand people freezing their butts off waiting to worship a rat."

Alas, not to burst anyone's bubble, but I've read his predictions aren't too accurate!

If the groundhog does not see his shadow, spring is supposed to come early. If he sees his shadow, spring is delayed for six weeks.

Astronomical spring occurs on March 20 this year -- that is almost seven weeks away. So if GH does not see his shadow, spring will come early, and if GH sees his shadow, spring will come early.

I don't know if he can even pry his eyes open, after a winter of hibernation.

Probably not! I hope he gets paid well for his important job--and getting his sleep disturbed.

We also have Groundhog Day here in Canada. We had Whiarton Willie, from Ontario, but he passed on. We have Shubenacadie Sam in Nova Scotia.
Thanks for this!

This is not the same Punxsutawney Phil as always, either. They die, and then get replaced with one given the same name.

I wonder if Phil is a male... how do they tell?

I suspect groundhogs have visible "equipment" that can be distinguished. But why couldn't we have a Philomena?
