I've finally decided that I need to get over my performance anxiety, so I just volunteered to play the harp, in a Toronto Harp Society, outreach event at the beginning of June. We'll be playing for veterans at Sunnybrook hospital. I figure that'll be a gentle and appreciative audience to break myself in on. The only thing I'm worried about is that probably most of the other performers are going to be professionals, while I'm a total amateur. I'm going to play some of my favourite easy celtic pieces that I know really well.

So proud of you
Don't sweat it, you've got talent, obviously, so instead of feeling "less than" feel proud of yourself that your talent is on par with that of a professional's!
Really proud of you

I'm sure you will do great, and don't worry. I have worked at one VA hospital or another for over 25 years. The Veterans greatly appreciate everyone who comes to entertain them. You are not only helping yourself by getting used to performing in front of people but you are helping our Veterans. Thank you for your contribution.

I've done that many times and I wish I could tell you something that would help.
Maybe knowing that stage fright is momentary helps? Also remember to enjoy playing and that your audience is there to enjoy your music too.
Good luck and I'm sure you'll do fine.

What a terrific thing for you to do, splitimage!!

The elderly absolutely love it when musicians come in to perform ~ big smiles and enjoyment. They aren't critical at all. I'm sure that you'll do very well. Try not worry and let yourself have fun!

Maybe you can get it recorded, to look back upon later and fully appreciate both the effort & the effect on everyone's mood. Best wishes to you!
