We all know that it's acceptable for women to cry in today's society. However, it's not as true for men although I hear that society is slowly changing it's views on the topic of men crying. So, how many of you think it is okay for men to cry when the time is right? Examples, during funerals, long-term relationship break ups, and other situations of that nature. Just wanted to see your view on the topic.

I don't mind seeing a man cry, at all. A man is human and has feelings so it is okay for him to cry.
When I witnessed my father cry, it was powerful. He comes from a culture were people are generally stoic, especially men. I realized he was (and is) just as vulnerable as everybody else. |

I think its totally fine for a man to cry and don't think its a sign of weakness at all. Would rather have a man express his real emotions rather than hold it in.

I am a man most days, so I can add to this one. I do feel its fine for a man to cry. I have never been around a man that didn't if put under the right or in this case worst circumstances. I have seen my father cry on a few occasions, and I have myself as well in fact it doesn't take much for me to cry since I was raised that you don't have to bottle those emotions up.

Well everybody cries unless there's some weird genetic disorder out there I don't know about.
If it something serious like funerals then it's understandable. If it's crying over watching Bambi then that is weak. The reason why men cry less is not so much because of society, it's because of hormones. |

The only people that think crying is "unacceptable" are narcissists who feel no emotion at all and do not care about other people.

People say men can cry but they have different reactions when they do.
For example a parent is more likely to be impatient with a boy for crying. |

Now, my husband I have only seen cry a handful of times but my ex husband was another story. He could cry at the drop of a hat and used to use this as a weapon to emotionally manipulate me.

I think it's totally acceptable for men to cry. I feel like one reason men don't cry as often as women is that they have an unrealistic expectation to be tough and strong. The society's view also plays a role, but the older people get the less they seem to care about what society thinks : )) What seems to have the biggest influence is the upbringing..so if a boy is told to be honest to himself and in touch with his emotions, he is very likely to develop into a man who might shed a tear now and then. Whereas if a boy grows up being told to never cry he probably bottles up everything and masks his emotions later on.

I agree with the previous statements. I think it shows vulnerability, which can be good or bad of course, depending on the situation. But I like a guy who doesn't have to act tough, and can show emotions.

I think it makes a real man to cry, My husband has cried lots.. when he has been worried about me or the kids, No way is it a weakness if anything I think it shows that they are human, I think a lot of men that don't or won't cry let their pride or ego stand in their way.

Shoot, I even have problems when I cry as a woman.......I grew up with a mother who was over emotional.....& I didn't want to be anything like her......so very seldom would I allow myself to cry.....& sometimes when I got so frustrated that the tears wanted to come out...I took a long walk by MYSELF so that no one else would see my emotions & it was definitely that way when I was the only woman engineer working with all men.....wasn't about to show any sign of weakness around them.
So some women have the same problem that men have.....even though I know it's ok to cry. Since that time, I have allowed myself to show my emotions a lot more....but I really have to be upset or frustrated or really feel horrible about something before I let the tears out however in therapy.....I seem to have a lot of tears that won't come out any other time.....behind closed doors & in a place where I know I'm safe from others knowing. I think & I know that it's ok for men to cry...& for me also....but it doesn't mean that's how it comes out in real life

If people tell me that men should not cry, i'd be like wow...
many people have made me cry and they felt no shame about it. like this one time when this guy offended me and he's all like omigosh he's going to cry., and then he starts to be all sorry, but he was just being fake. this one time in fourth grade, this girl did not let me play handball for one reason or another. i'm still a little mad at her because she made me cry and some girl approached me and asked me why i was crying and i just walked away like that. i was very upset. Her brother was not any better because he often made me cry too and i was the oldest. Can't believe I let these two little munchins get the better of me..It seemed as though they were planning this all along because they would be at the park for hours and i would look down the balcony to see if they were there and if i ever saw them there i would rush downstairs and head towards the park and meet them. it always goes well in the beginning and then later they would just play their tricks on me. i felt like they were doing it on purpose. they even called me... well i don't know but these guys were trying to make rhymes with my name in a malicious manner. That was so many years ago and i just happen to remember it as I'm recalling it. |

we were all kids at the time.
her little brother was pissing me off so much that i finally just pushed him and then he would grab a handful of sand and throw it at me and it would land on my head every time. He even did it to a little girl whom he had no connections with. he was such a mean little monster. that's why i have always disliked the younger generations because they happen to be the worst to get along with. and today, some girl who was playing monopoly with me was all trying to cheat and everything and i'm just asking her all these questions and everything and she would explain to me but luckily some guy came and explained some of the rules to me. wow, can't believe our younger generation would be so obnoxious, so dishonest. |

I raised my son that it is ok to cry! I heard his wife tell their 1 yr old son that men in her house don't cry! that is a bunch of bull. It takes a real man to be able to show his emotions like that. It makes us realize they are human and have feelings too.

Not where I live. Crying is seen as unacceptable, and if you cry, you cry alone and don't talk about it. Sometimes women are close and they can cry in front of a female friend. But crying in public and people would think you belonged in an institution.
