Has anybody got experiences with Meetup .com. I'm in the UK but i know they are worldwide. They seem to charge a lot for their services but i'm not sure what people really get out of it. It seems typical of the internet to me that what used to be informal groups or clubs or societies are now almost impersonal, quite rigid, pay in advance money making making oppurtunities that i'm not totally sure about. I was going to go to a writers group tonight but am put off a) by the fact that they all seem to have written a lot (some are published authors and it seems more about getting published than about nurturing creativity) and b) i'm not sure really what i get for my £3. Just the chance to meet people who write i guess. Oh for the old old days when things were much less structured and easy going. Or is it just me.

No, man, I'm completely with you on this one. It sucks when you're stuck in a sticky situation, and you wanna just get out and meet some people. ¬_¬ I went on that site at some point, and the moment I found out they charged, I veered right off it. I don't trust sites like that at all. Up to you if you do or not, but I personally don't recommend it. I'm also in the UK. By the way, always take care when meeting stranger from the 'net! Lots o' creepies out there.

So far the site has been free for me. I'm just so nervous about going out and meeting people.

I'm in Canada and use it a lot. I joined a book club through meetup.com it costs $2.00 / session, once a month and that's to cover the organizer's expenses. I've joined a women's yoga group (free), a music & spirituality group, and a couple of social groups, that do things like go out for cheap meals, cycling, walking etc. I've always had a good experience with all the groups I've joined and found people to be friendly. I live in a big city and it can be hard to meet people, especially when you're not working, or in school, so for me meetup is a lifesaver.

I found a brilliant local group on there. Where I am at least, it's the individual group that decides how much to charge (they have to pay a fee to the website, and then venue hire/ materials etc if applicable), ours is just £5 every six months. The meetup.com site is just providing webspace, visability and online infrastructure, everything else is decided by the group leader, so the groups can be very different.

Meeting new people is not healthy. Too many bad things go on and well they are people.

There's always somebody who just has to be negative.

I have used local meetup groups, but only group with many people. It depends on what you go on there for.
