I have never been a fan of basketball, and I hate it. The reason for this is that I have never been very good at it. I couldn't shoot it and i used grandma style for the most part. others kind of laughed. i never did anything when it came to games and this one guy just told me i was useless. hey, if i do something wrong, i'll get yelled at so i'm just like no...i just want to pretend like i'm doing something. i'm glad there were a few who were just like me. if they were all great, i would have been feeling pretty bad and others would talk about how i sucked at playing and everything. Gosh, these guys were great. I feel like I have to be good at playing something in order to fit in, like guys will be all like,"Are you kidding me? You can't even play basketball?" do they make you join a sport in college or no? I could really care less about these sports. I just think they're stupid. Why? I can't play.

There's more sports than basketball. No, it's not required to play sports in college. Although, if I recall, I did have to take one physical education elective, yes I did! I took step aerobics with my bff. Had this instructor named 'Buffy', no lie, and wow, the abs workout at the end...

Anyways, one need not play b-ball to appreciate watching as a spectator. Do you realize, how much one needs to practice shooting to get a great form?! More than you'd realize!!

My dad, taught me, to lay down on the floor or couch, and to perfect my form, I needed ball control and to lay there with the ball going up in the air, and right down into my hand, er, um, fingertips....

Becoming good at anything, requires persistence, dedication, determination, etc.

Don't sweat those that are teasing you, for not having been trained, in the first place...

Kids can and are cruel, even though they are 'taught' about 'bullying' in school and supposedly, and I mean supposedly, in the home!

My oldest has had little things through the years. He was nervous, earlier, this year because one of his 'friends' said something about his push-up form. Let's say, I showed him. Used Yoga, Plank Pose, to get him precisely where he needed to be. He needed push ups to start the wrestling club, this past spring. So we started in January.

Guess, their daddy's work them harder than I once, thought...hmmmm...

I know what you mean, about teasing, taunting and being left out.

If you are required to take physical education in college you will probably have track and field or a bunch of different sports one after the other. In my university the men did not get a choice, they just had a generic "phys ed" course but we women were given choices and I took fencing and senior life saving.

I can't do pushups either. every time i get into a pushup position, my friend criticizes me and says hey your hands are too far apart from your knees and everything and i'm like what the heck?
Yeah i guess being laughed at is no fun. i wish i can do pushups correctly. is there a video that shows how i can do it perfectly? there ought to be some basketball tutorials as well!

I dont want to take p.e. at all because i'll probably have to go through p.e. and everything and i'm just like no way i'm not going to take this class. i dont care if i dont get enough credits or anything but there's no way i'm going to participate in sports like basketball and football. the latter is much more dangerous than the former and if you get attacked, you may suffer a lot. i would rather be boring, but safe.

Actually I love basketball. I used to go out every afternoon when I was in high school and practice my shots. I impressed the coach when in her P.E. class I made a foul shot that was all net. She was actually willing to put me on the school team. But then I damaged my knee in volleyball. (I do not like volleyball now.)

Thing is, I am less than 5 feet tall.

I have never been really good at sports. I'm not a natural athlete. But with practice I was able to do okay. I took Fencing and Golf in college P.E. As far as I know, all colleges require P.E. classes.

Heyitsme7, I think guys are given choices about what P.E. classes they can take now. At least my sons were. So, keep that in mind. I'm sure there are ways you can practice a sport. Maybe even get some pointers from people who are good at it.

If basketball is not your thing, then look for another sport you can work on. Okay?

I like playing basketball with the kiddos. They were always impressed by me when I made swishes, and we have some inside jokes about "don't break the drain" instead of "don't break the chain". I am not great at basketball, but once I get into the rhythm I can make some consecutive shots.

Watching basketball on TV? Lame. So boring. Not as boring as baseball, but boring.

Plank Pose | Yoga Poses | Yoga Journal

Well, my son, can fly through a push up, like it's no one's business. I started him off with plank, so here's plank. ((then just push down and back up, that's what I do, in plank pose while doing yoga...I add in the push ups))

Well I do want to learn how to play properly. I mean, I've been taught how to shoot at least once by my P.E. teachers every year in middle school. I was also been instructed freshman and sophomore year of high school. We only had to take 2 years of P.E. so I was like,"What a relief! We're finally over with P.E. I don't ever have to take it again!"

You were less than five feet when you were in high school?

Yep, and I never did make it to five feet---and now I am shrinking with age! Height didn't matter that much for a job as a college professor. Good thing I didn't have my heart set on a career as a professional basketball player, though!

Heyitsme7, as I tried to show with my example, people can be adequate with at least a sport or two if they work at them.....

I am glad to see the video about basketball fundamentals you were given here. Maybe I'll watch it, too. I love college basketball, and I'd like to learn even more about the rules, etc.!

I've never really felt that I had to explore my feelings for individual sports, however I do happen to be very good at basketball and I've been told that I am actually awesome at it and should sign up for the NBA.

I love playing basketball! I'm not too great at playing, only shooting hoops with one other person. But I love it

there are many different ways to do pushups, so you may actually be doing a correct form of another pushup, not just the standard. there is a wide stance pushup, where your hands are supposed to be farther apart. just saying

When I was much younger - pre-teen - I was tiny and I was a whiz at b-ball. Couldn't shoot hoops worth a tinker's hoot, but man oh man could I move that ball up and down the court. I'd tear from one end of the court to the other, then pass to someone who could make the shot. Everyone assumed that because I was so short I couldn't play the sport!

Payne, I was never much good at sports in school either. The irony is that I ended up a pro athelete! I just needed a chance to find what I was good at.

Shooting, is all about the follow through of your fingers and keeping your elbow lined up with you hips. Elbow should always be with your hip bone. And as the ball rolls off your fingers, your index finger should, in theory, go into the hoop.

My dad, played semi-pro, and was also a Hall of Famer, at his college. I was always fascinated with his 2500pt basketball. There's photos of me, as a little baby, crawling around with it

Basketball has been my favorite sport since I was a small child. I grew up watching it with my dad and over time it grew to a love of basically all sports. The only sport I am remotely decent at playing is basketball since I've been playing for most of my life. I'm still not the best however, I never even tried out for a team in school (despite people telling me too, I was too anxious about sucking in front of everyone). But I really like playing. I find it to be a way to escape from the nasty things in life, even if just for a little while. When I was younger I would go outside nearly everyday if I could and play in the backyard all alone. I would imagine two made up pro teams playing (yes I had my own made up pro league with my own made up players) and I would play as both teams and be the person shoutcasting on tv as well. Those were the days. These days I stay inside most of my time but I still go out to the park to play with a friend, or play in the backyard with my nieces and nephew.

I like that you have a desire to play though you aren't very good. It takes a lot of practice. I'm not nearly the best player by any means, but I try and have fun doing it (win or lose). It also helps to have a friend with the same attitude. My friend may not be very good either, but we play against and with one another and we suck doing it but it's fun and also pretty good therapy.
Thanks for this!

I like that several people said that even though they aren't particularly good at basketball they still enjoy playing. I'd like to toss out the idea that we can play sports just for the fun of it. We can't all be the best at whatever sport you want to name BUT we can enjoy playing for the sake of playing.

I feel really meh about basketball. With one exception. 1983 and Phi Slamma Jamma! Greatest college basketball team ever!

When I was a kid basketball was something we played between baseball and football seasons. The best player in the neighborhood was about 3' tall lol. He was so small and quick that it was impossible to defend against him. Watching him was the best part of playing.
Games should be played for fun. I was pretty good at football and baseball but... I was trying to catch a popup once and the wind was blowing the ball around. I got dizzy tracking it and fell down. So did everyone else... fell down laughing.
I laughed too. It was hilarious and it felt good. I wish you'd had better friends.

Yeah, just like video games. You don't have to be particularly good but as long as you are having fun playing, nothing else really matters. I guess it's a lot easier when you have someone that also feels the same to play with. Someone who just plays the game for fun. Also, you don't always have to play competitively against someone, sometimes my friend and I end up shooting around casually while chatting about life and things like that.

Yeah, but you see others playing and you wish you were just as good as they were I mean, people have laughed at the way I throw and scolded me for violating the rules and everything. I do not want to be yelled at by my own teammates.

True, Heyitsme7, I wouldn't think any of us would like being yelled at by our teammates. But if you do choose to play b-ball again, then you could get better prepared to play acceptably well by learning the rules--and practicing, practicing, practicing.
Thanks for this!

It's not pleasant to be yelled at by team mates. What about finding some people who just want to shoot hoops and not compete?

Now that's a thought. If only they'll be patient enough to help me every step of the way.
