Poecilotheria rajaei

WARNING: SPIDER INSIDE - New Spider!

Creepy looking (male) spider found in north Sri Lanka; apparently its full span is greater than that of an average human adult skull. >.< It's part of the tarantula family, apparently.

Moral of the story? Stay the heck away from Sri Lanka!

That would scare me but the pattern is beautiful. I like learning about new species. Reminds how important it is to preserve wild life.

ooooh, I have a Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica they look a lot a like. They are an arboreal tarantula. They have the worst venom that can put you in the hospital. Although No tarantula is poisonous and CAN NOT kill a human unless they are severely allergic to the protein in the bite...like a bee sting. the poecilotheria family is awesome!!! they are fast too.

Very pretty markings.

I saw a beautiful orb weaver while walking in the botanical gardens yesterday.

I doubt I'd be this calm talking about it had I walked into the web and started doing the "OMG! Where The Hell Is It?" Spider Dance though!

Thanks for this!

I think it's beautiful, too, but not if it were coming towards me. The weird thing was, when I first looked at the pic, it had a slight effect as if it were moving, or the cameraperson was moving back, then forward, just a little bit. Weird.
