Does anyone else get this?
I had a big night this weekend and when I woke up, I remembered why I stopped going out.
I didn't go out for a long time because I'd get too depressed in the days following the night out.

I haven't experienced it directly, but I read that in the long run alcohol is a depressant! Is that right? I know it "depresses" parts of the brain, so they don't work as well.....

I don't know the facts about it.
I just can't stop myself once I've started.
I always get bad depression when I sober up and when i realise how much I've spent I feel worse.

I can relate to what you are referring to...I feel sad later on after I have a glass of wine.

I have never really had a taste for alcohol, per se, but I do love a nice champagne / sparkling wine (I guess because I associate it with feeling happy and celebrations, and it is a treat. All the bubbles, and it is not heavy).

But I also recall not feeling great after a glass or two. Not necessarily physically ill, but emotionally dragging which I think has to do with alcohol, wine being a depressant.

Since I started taking meds (for depression and anx), I do not drink at all because of the possible / potential side effects (I dont want to interfere with the meds doing their job).

When you mentioned not being able to stop...is it because you feel good for the moment? Do you drink to the point of falling asleep or not remembering stuff after a certain point?

Alright.
I mean last Saturday for example, I started drinking around 7 and didn't stop until 1pm Sunday.

That could definitely create a hangover: both physical and emotional.

Do you think you have a problem with alcohol? Would you consider stopping after a couple of beers or glasses of wine to see what happens? I had a firefighter/first responder friend that drank like you mentioned on his days off...I believe it is called binge drinking. He didnt drink while on duty, but as soon as shift ended, he drank for hours.

Have any of your friends or family mentioned anything to you?

There is a section on PC re: drinking that is extremely helpful and supportive. Have you written about this there?

Please continue to reach out...you are not alone. there are really good , caring, supportive people here and perhaps can help answer questions and provide input re: this situation (if you would like it).

It's a problem yeah. My family drinks like that so it's normal. I try to remember to stop drinking after a few beers but i always forget.
I quit drinking once and only last about a month.
All my mates drink so it's not so easy.
I'll sort it out though eventually.

Glad you are here and posting. Please keep it up and feel free to share as much or as little as you like. Yes, you will definitely sort it out

In the meantime, and forgive me if I sound like a "mom", be careful! All that alcohol isnt really great for your guts ... and if you are feeling sad after you drink, it could be messing with brain chemistry.

Hugs.
That's exactly one of the biggest reasons that I never let myself get trashed anymore.

Many hugs.

When I went through my "wow! alcohol!" phase when I turned 20 I always woke up depressed. Depersonalizing. I never felt physically hungover, it was always mentally. I don't drink anymore 1) because of my health issues 2) because it just brought me to such depressive states.

Aside from the hang over feeling I get once in awhile, those are never any fun. I don't usually get depressed unless I made a complete @ss out of myself, then I just beat myself up. But I don't drink a lot. Usually I drink alone, whiskey or vodka, str8 up of course. A 1.75 L lasts me about 2 weeks. If I go out I onlt have about 3-5 beers that's it. If I do shots out, then more. But usually I don't and I drink alone and do not get depressed unless I make a @ss out of myself

Yeah, I'm fine when I drink alone.
Whether I make a fool of myself or not, I still get that feeling.

I suppose the ? to ask yourself is: If it is depressing you, is it worth a few hours of fun?

I never really had a drinking habit. I think it was normal "teenage" behavior where once in a while I'd binge drink with my friends and try not to get caught by parents.

I just stopped really. I don't miss it or anything. I still allow myself a glass of wine at family get togethers and such, but I never aim to over drink or get drunk anymore.

It's easier said than done.
When my whole family drinks, all my mates are rough types and heavy drinkers too.
When we go out anywhere, its to a bar or pool hall. Always around alcohol.
And it tastes really good.

Maybe for now you can alternate ... beer (or whatever), then tonic water with a lime or cold tea, no ice ... it is worth a try. And that way, you have something in hand, but not alcohol the entire time. Just a thought.
