Left Brain / Right Brain

Which way is the dancer spinning?

Apparently if you first see her spinning anti-clockwise, you are more left brain orientated. If you first see her spinning clockwise, you are more right brain orientated.

Left Brain / Right Brain

I saw her going clockwise. In fact, it took me about 15 minutes and a headache to even be able to see her spinning anti-clockwise and still then I could only see it for a few seconds before she flipped back into clockwise spinning. I must be very right brain orientated.

I am interested to know what other people's experience with it are?

Apparently most people are left brain orientated and will see her spinning anti-clockwise. I have a suspicion that on this forum that might not be the case.

That broke my brain. At first I couldn't really tell which way she was spinning. Now she looks like she's spinning clockwise ... wait ... counterclock ... ouch. Clockwise, she's spinning clockwise.

All the "left brain/right brain" tests I've ever taken come out that I'm about 55% left brained and 45% right brained. Basically I'm really OCD about being chaotic and plan to put being spontaneous on my calendar.

I see her clockwise. I'm mixed-handed, if that has anything to do with it...

I see her spinning clockwise. I can't see her spinning counterclockwise. I've always known that I'm very right-brained.

she does switch from clock to counter clock and repeats. Watch it long enough you'll catch it.

Everyone here knows that this is a myth right?

It's not a myth, rather it is an optical illusion. Many people watching it will not see a loop because their eyes, and their brain, aren't able to see the loop. It does engage your brain it right hemispherical reaction as well as left. Many tests like this are used in epilepsy research.

For a "hack" of this, cover the girls body and only leave her foot visible. You will see that you can change the directions as the stimuli has been reduced. So unless, for me, it's on a loop every 5 seconds... I'd say the myth is a myth.

For another test on this that isn't a "myth", use your dominant hand and write the number 8. Have your foot on the same side "write" the number as well. You will see that for most of us, it is impossible to continue with your foot while writing a perfect 8 as both sides of your brain are trying to compensate for directions and reactions.

the myth is that the right side is creative and the left side is logical. Actually the brain uses both sides for both

another popular myth is we only use 10% of our brain, again simply not true.

I think that "it's a myth" is the myth. Ultimately, different areas of the brain do have different functions and some people are stronger in some areas and some people are stronger in others. That's not really something anyone can argue with. Maybe the divide isn't strictly symmetrical left and right, sure, but that doesn't debunk the theory, it simply gives it more accuracy. Just because the theory isn't completely right, doesn't mean that it is completely wrong.

You will also notice that I didn't say anything about the left being logical and the right being creative in the original post (I guess the image implies it but hey, it's a cool image ). That is clearly an over simplification, but again, I imagine is not completely wrong either.

I guess the proof of the pudding is in the eating, some people see the dancer spinning clockwise, some people see the dancer spinning anti-clockwise. You can break the .gif image apart into it's constituent frames and see that it is indeed a single loop, an optical illusion. She does not change direction:

That was my technique too That was the only way I as able to see her spinning anti-clockwise, by covering up all but her lower legs and then slowly revealing the rest.

Thanks everyone for responding to the thread. It's really interesting to see that indeed it does seem to be that more people here are 'right brainers'.

Oh yeah, that's complete rubbish. Imagine if we were actually simple right or left brained you'd just have the opposite limbs working.

Oh god people still believe the 10% brain myth? There's a whole lotta brain in there, if we were only using 10% I'd be scared

Clockwise. I tried to imagine how the dancer might be spinning anti-clockwise, and I just couldn't grasp the concept at all. I already know I am very "right brained", I also know the left-right dichotomy is oversimplified.

Most people see her spin clockwise first, not because of their brains but because the brain looks for clues. Since there are no features telling what is back and front, the brain asks for other clues. I don't know why, but there is something in that pic that makes people see clockwise more.

There are other similar images where most people see them counter clockwise.

I can also change how she turns at will.

Counter Clockwise; Left Brain Orientated. Another way, to tell, fold hands together, whichever thumb is on top, is the orientation of your brain. Left thumb, on top here
