It's long been known than a smelly pair of feet bears more than a slight resemblance to a block of ripe cheese, but scientists have taken this link to the next level by making cheese from a foot. Experts have made the stomach-churning creations using bacteria from the human foot as well as a belly button and even an armpit. Scientist Christina Agapakis and scent expert Sissel Tolaas gathered microbes for their project 'Selfmade' which recently debuted at an exhibition about synthetic biology in Dublin.

Ms Tolaas said on her website: 'Selfmade is a series of ‘microbial sketches’, portraits reflecting an individual’s microbial landscape in a unique cheese.' The cheese is supposed to reflect the flavours of the humans they belong to. Like the human body, each cheese has a unique set of microbes that metabolically shape a unique odour.

There are eleven cheeses in the exhibition. Each cheese was created using starter cultures sampled from the skin of artists, scientists, anthropologists, and cheese makers. The samples of bacteria used in the cheese came from armpits, a foot, a bellybutton and tears and were taken using sterile cotton swabs. Ms Agapakis told Dezeen: 'Despite [their] chemical and biological similarities, there are obviously very different cultural and emotional responses to stinky cheese and stinky feet.

'By making cheese directly from the microbes on the body, we want to highlight these bacterial connections as well as to question and potentially expand the role of both odors and microbes in our lives.'

Limburger and aged brick were originally made by monks using their own bodily bacteria. Limburger is from armpit bacteria.

Thank you, sincerely, for letting me share this gross bit of news with you.
Thanks for this!

I've already been grossed out by my dog's eating chocolate.....this is just plain disgusting also.

There are some cheeses I just will never eat........& now I know why.

Interesting thing about bleu cheese....my daughter was in the middle of a horrible reaction to penicillin & had this craving for salad with bleu cheese dressing.....she was actually just getting over the penicillin reaction. The next morning she couldn't even get out of bed....come to find out that the allergy to penicillin ends up being an allergy to bleu cheese & both get the same reaction.....& also when doubled up....it makes it double the reaction.

That's very interesting. I'm allergic to penicillin, but I love and eat bleu cheese with no problems.

My daughter's allergy to the penicillin was so bad her joints wouldn't move....she couldn't walk.....it was bad before we left on vacation & it got a little better but her GP gave us a prescription for steroids incase there was a problem so we decided to head to our condo in Jackson Hole Wyo. That first night we arrived, we went across the street to eat at the wonderful rib's place & she had the craving for Bleu cheese dressing. Next morning she woke up with all her joints not being able to move.

We talked to several people around.....one was the lady who ran the condo management....& the other our ski instructor friend. Both said they have the same problem with bleu cheese & with penicillin.

I also have a much more mild allergy to penicillin & I love bleu cheese & can eat it. Maybe it depends on how bad the allergy is or maybe the fact that she was already having the allergy to the penicillin & the bleu cheese just overloaded that histamine that was already have a problem.
