My Mom loves her little aquarium. Unfortunately she has accidentally killed more goldfish than any other person known to mankind. She becomes very attached to her fish and one is always, always named Samantha.

Mom's been out of fish for months now. Last Sunday she looked up sideways at me and said, "I've been thinking if you buy some fish, we can share them. You can put yours in my aquarium and come here and visit them."

So, today I went to Walmart. I had already managed to set up the aquarium again, install a heater, fix the filter and make sure the water temperature was just right. I completely surprised her with two golden and black fish that are not goldfish. She named them Dolly and Molly. The algae eater is Leroy and the tiny catfish is, you guess it - Samantha!

I added a bubble stone and Mom's so happy. She just called with a report that everyone has settled down and had a nice dinner in their aquarium. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

It will last until I'm the one that has to clean the aquarium.

Jan, that is so cute!! Mom's Fish

I don't know the first thing about fish -- my brother overfed the goldfish I had when I was 6 and my dad flushed it, and that was the end of fish for me Mom's Fish -- but I *did* watch Finding Nemo repeatedly, so that makes me an expert, right? Mom's Fish Don't they make self-cleaning fish tanks these days?

No, they don't have self cleaning ones, but I sure wish they did. My Mom washed the fish the last time and of course they all died. She said if they were in dirty water, they had to be dirty, too.

And they wonder why I'm a germaphobe! Mom's Fish

Jan, I need to meet your mom. I think our brains work the same way. It makes perfect sense to me that the fish must be dirty if they're in dirty water!

I do like to think I would have known I would kill the fish if I washed them, though! But I love the idea of it. Mom's Fish

Jan, what a sweet thing to do for your Mom! I love aquariums and use to have one but like your Mom, I could never keep the little guys alive for very long.
It made me feel so bad that I disasembled the aquarium as I couldn't take seeing them floating at the top all the time.
Here's wishing your Mom the best with the new fish and many hours of enjoyment watching them swim around!
Take care,
Linda

Mom didn't understand that you have to take a little water out and make sure the temperature stays the same. She should have known she couldn't wash the fish, but I just never thought to tell her. It didn't occur to me that anyone would want to wash a fish.

Mom's a former nurse and she's big on fighting germs. I realize I made her sound silly, but she really did wash the poor fish.

She has reported in this morning that she spent anxious hours watching over Molly last night, but that she's fine now and swimming around having a great time. LOL!

Hugs,

Jan

I had an aquarium for about 2 1/2 years. Wow... I went through SOOO many fish... I think at least 40 some! The last batch I had a really pretty fantail goldfish, a regular goldfish and a cute little algea eater. Anyhow, my family and I went on vacation and I put in one of those vacation feeder things. well apparently that wasn't enough for them and the two gold fish ATE the algea eatter!!! there was just it's little skeleton sitting at the bottom and my two goldfish were hiding in the corner looking guilty! (they died a couple of days later)

Another story close to your's Jan! My parents went on vacation and left thier fish "Bert" with my grandmother. They never cleaned his tank because that's how he liked it, anyhow my grandmother decided she'd give it a really good cleaning. Took out ALL the old water and scrubbed everything clean and shiny with bleach! She put Bert back in and he died! When my parents came back they noticed the tank was sparkling clean and there was a much skinnier "Bert" in place.

Oh Spaz! I thought only my Mom could do something like that!!!

She called today and reported Leroy is having a grand day and the others are just fine. Samantha is apparantly a bit shy and hides on the bottom of the tank. Considering she's a catfish, that's normal, but I don't think Mom realizes that. Mom's Fish

Hugs,

Jan
