"According to a 2006 Canadian study, cats are more effective than medication in preventing heart disease. Out of the 4,435 subjects (aged 30 to 75), those who did not have a cat had a 40% higher risk of having a heart attack and a 30% greater risk of dying from other heart diseases than those who do have or have had a cat".

I'm not surprised since statins don't prevent heart attacks if you haven't already had one. People get that med just because it is hellish expensive. It's only useful for those who already have heart disease.

I would like to offer, gently, the possibility that 'hating' cats probably means you have not had a wide experience with them---or had the unfortunate experience of meeting a nasty one, early in life---they're not all that way. They're as different as dogs, and to some extent, as people, in their personalities and temperaments.

The cats I've had the privilege to know have been, overwhelmingly, great characters. I've experienced kindness, compassion, concern, worry, possessiveness, humour (even clownishness), shyness, joy, and an entire range of emotions we tend to think of as primarily (and even exclusively) human, on the part of many a kitty it has been my happiness to live with.

I do understand how a really good feline companion could assist a human to live a better, less stress-filled, life---as I have experienced the pleasure of knowing some really wonderful, gentle cats, personally, and for a VERY long time.

Furthermore, any animal who tolerates us for any length of time MUST have something very special going for them---as I consider humans to be capable of the worst kinds of atrocities and cruelty ever committed, anywhere.

Animals are not gratuitously cruel. What they do follows a natural order, and instinct.

It is people who commit the unforgivable, or who train or force animals to behave in unnatural and terrifying ways.

The exception is Jon Arbuckle who's cat probably put him on meds. That's interesting that having owned a cat in the past tense would have an effect. Hope that's true.

Meanwhile, anybody renting cannot find a place anymore that allows pets.

Actually Nick's Nose - that wasn't my experience. When I was apartment hunting last Sept I called about 10 buildings in North York, looking for a 2 bedroom

.It was prtty much an even split on buildings that allowed pets and those that didn't;

Thanks for this Yoda, I wonder if it is something to do with the purring. I have heard that their purr has healing properties, not sure if that is just for the cat or includes humans. Anyhow, I'm mighty glad I recently got myself a cat.
