I cannot turn the heat below 55, despite 62-64 preferred, mostly too afraid of the pipes freezing when it is -20 but also just cannot function otherwise. I have used more wood this year to supplement it but still does not seem to be enough. I cannot keep this chilled feeling out of my bones. I am so ready for spring; I think the first day is Mar 20th this year. We still have 5 feet of snow on the ground so spring actually may be a little later this year for us. Praying not. I just wish they had told when I moved here, that yes, there were four seasons, which was excited about; they forgot to mention winter was the longest.
Yes. I feel how u do. Feet of snow..... When they say snow showers, they mean 3-6 " every time.
Once the temps get up into the teens, the house warms up. But that has been rare this winter.

The house was vacant for 3 years befor we bought it last spring. We bought from the bank and fixed it up. Next year we will try and find out if we can. We are on a co-op which is cheaper than any other plan. We will see if they do that. Thanks.

I wonder if duke can tell you?

I closed in April a number of years ago and the first winter was particularly cold. My windows were the original. Some of them had gaps from settling and they were aluminum. No plastic helped and every time I'd hear the furnace all I could hear was cha ching, cha ching. I had a down comforter, regular blanket and a super heavy Indian blanket on my bed. The next summer I replaced all but the most expensive window compromising double hung for insulation and extra good glass (I really wanted double hung ) The new windows don't need plastic at all. Last year I replaced the aluminum sliding glass door and added a storm door. The cost has not gone down this year but my usage went down a lot. So I'm holding even for now. Still have to replace the big one and add some insulation . So expensive.

I have Florida Power & Light and they have some of the lowest rates around! I run my a/c 24/7 at about 74F... but did get several days off from that this "winter"... my electric bill has been under $100 a month since last summer (or so).

this house actually has new windows and siding done by the previous owner. we are on a mountain and the wind whips from the hayfields right up and slams our house so even with new windows, one side of the house we had to put plastic over them. we have a row of tall pines as a windbreak too......maybe more insulation in the attic? problem is husband and daughter are both ssi. we are broke.
ugg. spring is coming.....

Oh bummer. I would call duke and see about getting somebody to assess and give you suggestions. Honestly I think it is probably free or nominal and they might come up with ideas that are low cost or next to nothing. Not sure that I would wait til spring either. I mean why when they could feel drafts while it is cold? 2 years ago the city did a program for low flow toilets for 50 dollars then because the HOA pays the water bill they picked up the 50 dollars and the installation which they got a deal on. I'm not saying you could get the same deal (whether there is an HOA or not) but cities and states do things like that all the time but you don't always hear about it.

Some of them aid in doing those updates and help defray the cost, but you can often claim on taxes some updates or work toward energy efficiency
all and any aid for winterization has been discontinued here in ny.

Resources for Working Families | OTDA

Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)

also here

Look, I'm trying to help.
If these programs are no longer available, things are happening in New York that go far beyond energy costs. [Like running out of money budgeted for the year in the first quarter]

thank you for trying!
the only thimg we could get was emergency fuel assistance for wood because my H and daughter are on SSI.
winterization and fed home improvements are now low interest rate loans...I am self employed because a regular job takes 50% of my pay because of the SSI.
Just a sucky situation. I used to be a nurse.
But we will have to make due. trust me...we have looked into every available option there is.
We cant even get food stamps!
It makes no sense. Thank you for caring though.
