My mom thinks every psych drug I take is causing instant cancer in me. I roll my eyes at this. I've been taking Trileptal and Ambien though I sitll have major insomnia. So my mom bought Truehope Empowerplus vitamins and told me if I don't take them and they don't "cure" my bipolar disorder I have to pay her $200 and move out of the house. I don't have any place to live so I am forced to take these vitamins but they make me feel manic even if they are supposed to be vitamins for bipolar disorder. And they make me feel worse, so far though I've only been on them a couple days so I can't really tell. I tried to tell my mom they made me feel worse, but she called me a little witch and said, "You'll take what I say you're going to take." What can I do?

vitamins don't cure Bipolar. Are you seeing a doctor? Talk to your doctor and tell him what is going on.

If it is making you worse, don't take it.

Talk to your doctor is great advice assuming that it's an option for you, I'm not sure of your ability to see a professional mental health provider considering how controlling your mother seems to be. I did a quick search and found this article on PC of all places.

Whew. I will "fake" take the pills and be like, everything is fine. And I won't take them. I feel like ****. I wish the Trileptal was working.

I think you need to take your mother to the doctor and he/she can explain your illness to her. This is awful I feel sorry for you.

Is there an Adult Protective Services where you live? If your mother is interfering with your medical treatment on the threat of kicking you out, you've got a case and can report her.

I can't speak for the US system, but I would call legal aid regarding my rights regarding my own health vs being threatened by a parent to be kicked out.

It's possible that these vitamin pills are not doing anything for you one way or the other. Vitamins usually only change how we feel in two situations. If you are seriously undernourished and truly very deficient in a particular vitamin, then taking it may make you feel better. On the other hand, if you take very high quantities of a vitamin, you may get a toxic overdose, which would make you feel ill. I'll bet neither of those two situations applies to you. Your mother is probably just wasting her money buying an expensive version of some vitamins and minerals that you are already getting enough of in your food. If you are taking the pills as the label advises, then you probably are not getting toxic overdoses of anything. What I'm sure is making you feel bad is your mother threatening you. That's not helpful. Whether you swallow the vitamins, or cheek and discard them, is probably not going to change your bipolar problem or your insomnia. If your mother and you are in a power struggle (which is how this sounds,) then you might feel better mentally, if you feel you are winning. For your mother to be worried about the bad effects of medication is not totally wrong. All medications do have negative side effects, some that you feel and some that you don't feel. But she did bring you to the doctor to get the pills, right? These pills most likely won't cause cancer, but they can be detrimental. So you have to ask if they are doing you any good. If not, then there isn't much point of taking them. It's hard to have any kind of a decent life with insomnia. It may be worth risking some possible side effects to get a better sleep routine going. Usually, though, there are other things that have to be done also, which I believe you probably have been told about. (Going to bed at a set time and getting up at a set time. Not watching TV late at night. Etc., etc.) If you are under age 18, then calling you "bipolar" is really just a guess. People can have fluctuations in mood and energy for all sorts of reasons. These problems may get less, as you get older . . . . or not. Trileptal may help . . . . or not. It's all kind of an experiment. For every single illness in the world, there is someone out there saying that they have a vitamin concoction that can make the illness improve. Plus, they can come up with a study that they say is "scientific evidence" that the concoction helps. This happens because there is an awful lot of money to be made selling these concoctions. About the only thing that vitamins will help is a vitamin deficiency. Unless the doctor tells you that you have a deficiency, these expensive supplements are unlikely to do anything for you. But they usually don't do any harm either. The main thing to focus on is what you can do something about, which is your habits and behaviors. Maybe there is something there that is upsetting your mother. Ask her. Usually, our lives improve when we develop good habits and change behaviors that aren't doing us any good. |
